LAS VEGAS (AP) - U.S. Senate candidate Jack Carter and his mother, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, ended a two-day campaign sweep Wednesday, urging students to vote and get engaged in a critical wartime election.
"It is obvious to me that we are losing this battle in Iraq," Carter, the eldest son of ex-President Jimmy Carter, told a group of about 35 UNLV students. "It is a failure of leadership."
Carter, who recently returned to the campaign trail after an illness, has used his family ties to garner media attention over the past week. He and his father appeared in Las Vegas, Reno, Elko and Fallon, gathering crowds in some Republican strongholds. Rosalynn Carter, 78, worked the phones at a Las Vegas phone bank Tuesday and made a series of appearances Wednesday.
She said she was called back to campaign work by her son's race, and because she believes the Bush administration, "is different from every other administration" in its pre-emptive war policies. She said she believes her son's race is critical to Democrats taking control of the Senate.
