CANADA'S Opposition parties have voted to force the Government to implement the Kyoto Protocol and meet emissions reduction targets the Government believes are unattainable.
The minority Conservative Government, which plans to unveil new environmental regulations in the coming weeks in response to air pollution and global warming, has voted against the Bill, which must still pass several hurdles before it becomes law.
"We know that the Conservatives have abandoned the fight against climate change. They abandoned Kyoto. We want to force them to accept the Kyoto Protocol and respect what was promised to Canadians," said Pablo Rodriguez, a Liberal MP who signed the proposed legislation.
Canada agreed under the Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 6 per cent below 1990 levels by 2012.
