OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- The Bush administration has hired a new director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency region that includes several disaster-prone states in the West, after 2½ years with no permanent chief.
FEMA Director David Paulison promoted Nancy Ward to oversee Region IX, the largest of FEMA's 10 regions. The territory includes Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Guam, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia.
Ward is currently the director of response and recovery for the region.
