NATO assumes command in Afghanistan (US forces under foreign command)
i don't know if there is any precedent for this but I do know that this was the gravest of fears of the Republicans for years.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- NATO assumed command of military operations in eastern Afghanistan Thursday, giving it responsibility for day-to-day operations across the country.

Some 12,000 U.S. forces in Afghanistan will now fall under NATO command, under the leadership of British Gen. David Richard, commander of the International Security and Assistance Force.

Another 4,000 and 5,000 U.S. forces will remain dedicated to training the Afghan National Army and police. The remaining 5,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan are special forces conducting counter-terrorist operations against Taliban and al-Qaida forces and leadership, and support and logistics forces.

U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Karl Eikenberry will remain as the national commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, according to the U.S. military. He will also remain in charge of the training Afghan forces, and will oversee U.S. military reconstruction and economic development projects.

2. Remember Bosnia/Kosovo?
The reTHUG noise machine was in overdrive when Clinton wanted to establish a multi-national security force, accusing him of treason for even suggesting the possibility that American forces might have to serve under a non-American commander.

7. Yes, the repukes were apoplectic about the possibility
of US forces serving under a UN foreign commander.

I wonder how the freepers are reacting.

(Of course we know that 9-11 changed everything)

6. This could be the PNACers way of alienating themselves from the FUBAR
.

situation they have created in Afghanistan.

NOW

any failure {pretty well guaranteed after the Soviets 10 year attempt} to control Afghanistan will be on NATO's head,

not the USA's War-Machine - -

8. Perhaps NATO is more acceptable than the UN
I think the fact the British are in charge makes it much more palatable for the Americans.
