Internal Poll Suggests Hastert Could Devastate GOP
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,218043,00.html
WASHINGTON — House Republican candidates will suffer massive losses if House Speaker Dennis Hastert remains speaker until Election Day, according to internal polling data from a prominent GOP pollster, FOX News has learned.

"The data suggests Americans have bailed on the speaker," a Republican source briefed on the polling data told FOX News. "And the difference could be between a 20-seat loss and 50-seat loss."...

My tinfoil tells me they're fudging the numbers to pressure Hastert to abdicate. 50 seats is "1994 country" and even though I'd like to see us getting there, I don't see it.

16. It's entirely possible...
We currently LEAD in THIRTY Republican Districts and are tied or within the MOE in 13 more. There are another 7 "vulnerable" Republican districts that have not been polled.

FIFTY is possible...probably 40 to 50 is more likely though.

81. You're right. A 30 seat pick up is probably the upper range.
Congress is very tightly gerrymandered right now--engineered to be nearly 50-50. That's why we have extreme partisanship these days. Party discipline is essential and damn few Congressmen have any incentive to reach across for swing voters.

One of several variants:

Nobody loves me,
everybody hates me,
guess I'll go eat worms.

Long thin slimy ones,
short fat juicy ones,
see them wiggle and squirm.

Bite their heads,
suck their guts out,
throw the skins away!

Nobody knows how we can thrive
on worms three times a day.

Shave and a haircut, six worms!

137. They said that markings on the back of road signs...
were there as a secret method to direct United Nations troops during their upcoming invasion of the U.S.

Black helicopter conspiracy theory

Black helicopters are part of a conspiracy theory, prevalent among the American militia, that claims that special silent-running "black" helicopters are used by secret agents of the New World Order, United Nations troops and/or the Men in Black preparing to take control of the United States. Thinking they were under surveillance by "black helicopters," the Militia of Montana once tried to shoot down a National Guard helicopter on a training mission which flew over a ranch owned by fugitive militia leader Calvin Greenup.

Parapsychologist John Keel has argued that this theory has origins similar to those of UFOs, ghosts and fairies, i.e. that they are part of modern mythology; in this case, representing a fear of the government and its technology.

The greatest media attention to "black helicopters" was paid in February, 1995, when first-term Republican northern Idaho congressman Helen Chenoweth charged that armed federal agents were landing "black helicopters" (pronounced "heliocopters") on Idaho ranchers' property to enforce the Endangered Species Act. "I have never seen them," Chenoweth said in an interview in the New York Times. "But enough people in my district have become concerned that I can't just ignore it. We do have some proof." Chenoweth made the charges at a press conference without ever consulting with the Department of Interior.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which enforces the act, says that they do not own any helicopters and have never used any in Idaho. The only green and black helicopters in Idaho are used by the National Guard. Black helicopters without FAA-required running lights are regularly used by the drug interdiction office of the DEA. In addition, most US Army helicopters (such as the Black Hawk) are finished in a very dark chocolate or olive matte paint. With the progressive development of night-vision goggles, the need for helicopters to be lit when moving as a planned formation has been reduced.

Remember, these guys believe their own propaganda (that the Democrats want to ignore the terrorist threat and just arrest a few of them after we get attacked again, raise taxes to the moon and ruin the economy, build porn shops and gay wedding chapels on every corner, etc). Naturally, they're afraid of having the country run by a bunch of lunatics (i.e. their mental image of Democrats).

can't be good for Hastert...He reeks of a sweaty greasy republican pig...who doesn't give a shit about the working class or the poor, He looks like a self-severing money grubbing republican we all have stereo-typed in our psyche, because it's true.

The more sloppy is on TV defending his piggish lying ways, the more people who would never normally see this slob are seeing what a heartless, greedy, lying, filth republican looks like!

26. And To The Contrary, Per Hastert Yesterday
“He said he thought his resignation would just lead to a feeding frenzy where they would go after (Majority Leader John A.) Boehner, then (Rep. Thomas M.) Reynolds, then (Rep. John) Shimkus," Weyrich added. "And he said we would have the story running right up to the election.”

Looks like a Catch 22 to me. I tend to agree with Hastert, a Speaker stepping down in scandal five weeks before a major election cannot be spun away. They are probably better off rolling up Operation Distraction and transitioning into Operation Denial at this point.

But to think Foley has more influence on the American people than the 2700 US soldiers dead after the revelation of the Downing Street Memo. I say, Americans just don't relate to scandals that are not sex oriented.

48. What a sad statement about our country!
Unfortunately, I think you are exactly right. People seem to be more outraged by sex scandals than so-called leaders who lie us into a war that kills and maims thousands of our children/husbands/wives. I have zero tolerance for adults who prey on teenagers and children, but I would have a hard time looking Gold Star parents in the face and saying it's more important than their children dying.

Still, I guess we rejoice at anything that will take these a**holes out of government.

49. That bothers me a lot, too
I'm not trying to make Foley's conduct seem any less improper, or less disgusting, but why does it take a scandal involving sex to motivate people to vote the republicans out? The illegal war, the torture, the gutting of the Constitution, the sell-out of the middle class, the massive national debt, none of those things have stirred people as much as this. We've had one outrage after
another, and could barely get people out of their comas long enough to have those outrages register on them.

Does it take a sleazy situation regarding sex, and the cover-up, to make people realize that the republican party is filled with arrogant, smug, corrupt, self-serving hypocrites? Apparently it is enough to finally make people decide that trusting republicans being in control of government is a huge mistake.

87. Sex stories just appeal to a different demographic.
The war has saturated the demographic who are either catagorically against war, or have mature and realistic concerns about our countries direction. The Foley thing hits the demographic who think that news is the latest chapter in Jennifer Anniston's love life. This is a scandal that plays to the drama and sensation driven types.

It also hits the right wing "values" base since those guys are fucking puritanical about sex.

53. Fox News: Internal Poll Suggests Hastert Could Devastate GOP
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,218043,00.html

House Republican candidates will suffer massive losses if House Speaker Dennis Hastert remains speaker until Election Day, according to internal polling data from a prominent GOP pollster, FOX News has learned.

"The data suggests Americans have bailed on the speaker," a Republican source briefed on the polling data told FOX News. "And the difference could be between a 20-seat loss and 50-seat loss."

Most GOP lawmakers have stood by Hastert, pending a full airing of the facts in his handling of the Mark Foley affair, in which the former Florida representative was caught exchanging salacious messages with teen pages in Congress. The new polling data, however, suggests that many voters already have made up their minds.

The GOP source told FOX News that the internal data had not been widely shared among Republican leaders, but as awareness of it spreads calculations about Hastert's tenure may change. The source described the pollster who did the survey as "authoritative," and said once the numbers are presented, it "could change the focus" on whether the speaker remains in power.

DU should start what day/time do they throw Denny under the oncoming train.

77. Just out of curiosity, yall understand why Fox is nailing Hastert, right?
He's a liability. Fox needs to boost its ratings. Scandals sell. Hastert has always been a pawn--and exited Tom DeLay's pawn at that. Any replacement leader of the Republicans will do just as well as Haster. Plus now Fox has one more token "fair and balanced" moment to silence its critics when they slip into say Fox is pro-Republican. Plus sometimes conservatives, like most predators, just like to sharpen their claws on something from time to time.

Two years from now, Hastert will guest on Hannity's show and get treated with the deference due a senior statesman. He'll grovel for their air time and they'll drop him a few crumbs. Just thought yall'd appreciate some perspective.

Hastert (and more than a few other R's) would sacrifice his entire party for his own gain. What am I saying - he's already done that. This is pure salt-in-the-wound stuff. I picture a flop-sweaty fat man hanging onto a ledge with bloody, nailless fingers, who is crying, "I'm responsible - but it's not my fault!"

This desperate clinging to power will not go over the heads of many Republicans. I worry, though, about the Republican-controlled paperless voting machines.

121. Only if Democrats start pushing the issue. HARD
No pun intended.

Instead of staying out of the fray and letting the media do the damage for us, Democrats need to get out there on every level and start screaming their fool heads off. And maybe that includes most of us.

131. Questions...
Or that could be an inside-Republican ploy to pressure him to leave because he keeps insisting it won't help anything to resign. 50 seats means essentially 30+ due to this scandal. I think that's a bit drastic and not too credible. Never say never, but let's be realistic. Maybe 30 or even 35 tops. But even that's unlikely. 50? Com'on.

140. Wilson New Mexico on Page Committee
Heather Wilson, the Republican Congresswoman from New Mexico is or was on the Page Committee. According to NPR this morning she invited Foley to speak at the Page's farewell dinner one year.
Ms. Miranda, a Democratic and New Mexico'e Attorney General is running against Wilson. Is there any other info out there about Wilson, the Page committee and a Foley connection?

141. Only One Chance For The Neo-Con Ruling Fascists Now!

Somehow Shrub, and perhaps a few others (I can hope) will croak in the next few weeks and the USA's "only hope" will be to cancel or postpone the November election in the "best interests of the whole country".

It's going to take some radical action for the hidden "string pullers" to maintain their rule and especially to keep absolutely any investigations of the present regime from occurring.

They are screwing everything up so much that the paid off, corrupt MSM can't even keep the lid on any longer.

Many of the usually passive sheep are getting some glimmering of the reality around us, finally. We can only hope that they register to vote and then do it, hopefully absentee...

Once the Republicans fade away then it will be time to get rid of the many, way too many, Democrats who don't represent working people and never have. Well maybe for a few weeks before the election with a little "lip service" and nothing more substantial, ever... Republicans in Democrat's clothing abound.

145. Don't get to swept up in the euphoria
over Foleygate. Allowing the Repugs to spin their magic without a really strong statement from DNC leaves the matter in the hands of the media and the court of public opinion - despite the fact that Repugs would have us believe that the media is liberal - that damn ABC (forgot the Path to 9/11 already I guess) and Democrats, even Clinton, will be spun hard as the real culprits - letting this one play out while sitting on the sidelines could be a mistake imo.
