KABUL, Afghanistan -- A NATO soldier was killed in an attack by militants
who exploded a roadside bomb and fired on a military patrol in southern
Afghanistan on Saturday, the fifth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion
of Afghanistan.

The attack in the volatile Panjwayi district of Kandahar province happened
near a NATO base, the alliance said. One of the patrolling vehicles was
damaged. Attack helicopters and an explosives disposal team were dispatched
to the area.

NATO did not release the nationality of the dead soldier.

NATO soldier was 40th Canadian to die in Afghanistan: report

A NATO soldier was killed by militants in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, the alliance said, amid an unconfirmed news report that the victim was the 40th Canadian to die on the mission.

Militants attacked a NATO patrol near a base in the volatile Panjwaii district of Kandahar province, alliance officials said — the same area as a previous attack on Tuesday that killed two Canadian soldiers and wounded five others. More than 2,000 Canadian troops are deployed in the region and Canadians are leading the NATO forces there.

The Canadian Press, citing unnamed military officials in Kandahar, reported at about 11:45 a.m. ET that the soldier was Canadian. However, the report was not immediately confirmed by the Department of National Defence or NATO.

The latest death comes on the fifth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan.
