Newsweek: A Political Limbo - How low can the Republicans go? (Bush 33%)

A Political Limbo
How low can the Republicans go?

Oct. 7, 2006 -
-snip-

And that was the good news for the GOP. More worrisome still, the Foley fiasco is jeopardizing the party’s monopoly on faith and power. For the first time since 2001, the NEWSWEEK poll shows that more Americans trust the Democrats than the GOP on moral values and the war on terror. Fully 53 percent of Americans want the Democrats to win control of Congress next month, including 10 percent of Republicans, compared to just 35 percent who want the GOP to retain power. If the election were held today, 51 percent of likely voters would vote for the Democrat in their district versus 39 percent who would vote for the Republican. And while the race is closer among male voters (46 percent for the Democrats vs. 42 percent for the Republicans), the Democrats lead among women voters 56 to 34 percent.

-snip-
Meanwhile, the president’s approval rating has fallen to a new all-time low for the Newsweek poll: 33 percent, down from an already anemic 36 percent in August. Only 25 percent of Americans are satisfied with the direction of the country, while 67 percent say they are not. Foley’s disgrace certainly plays a role in Republican unpopularity: 27 percent of registered voters say the scandal and how the Republican leadership in the House handled it makes them less likely to vote for a Republican Congressional candidate; but 65 percent say it won’t make much difference in determining how they vote. And Americans are equally divided over whether or not Speaker Hastert should resign over mishandling the situation (43 percent say he should, but 36 percent say he shouldn’t).

The scandal’s more significant impact seems to be a widening of the yawning credibility gap developing between the President, his party and the nation. While 52 percent of Americans believe Hastert was aware of Foley’s actions and tried to cover them up, it’s part of a larger loss of faith in Republican leadership, thanks mostly to the war in Iraq. For instance, for the first time in the NEWSWEEK poll, a majority of Americans now believe the Bush administration knowingly misled the American people in building its case for war against Saddam Hussein: 58 percent vs. 36 percent who believe it didn’t. And pessimism over Iraq is at record highs on every score: nearly two in three Americans, 64 percent, believe the United States is losing ground there; 66 percent say the war has not made America safer from terrorism (just 29 percent believe it has); and 53 percent believe it was a mistake to go to war at all, again the first time the NEWSWEEK poll has registered a majority in that camp.

-snip-
Democrats now outdistance Republicans on every single issue that could decide voters’ choices come Nov. 7. In addition to winning—for the first time in the NEWSWEEK poll—on the question of which party is more trusted to fight the war on terror (44 to 37 percent) and moral values (42 percent to 36 percent), the Democrats now inspire more trust than the GOP on handling Iraq (47 to 34); the economy (53 to 31); health care (57 to 24); federal spending and the deficit (53 to 29); gas and oil prices (56 to 23); and immigration (43 to 34).

1. America is beginning to wake up and smell the coffee.
The coffee has been brewing for many many years. Let's see if this numbers continue to favor the Dems, including a Congressional win.

My fantasy word until then: Investigations!

39. LOOK AT THIS!!! A collection of various polls over the last 13 months
shows Bush's disapproval number has been higher than his approval number IN EVERY SINGLE EFFIN' POLL FOR OVER A YEAR NOW!!

Remember the "coffee" Austin Powers drank after Fat Bastard had a stool sample taken?

It ain't coffee we're smellin', it's shit--BUSHshit.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-HAWWWWWWW!!!

Investigations to follow, John Conyers at the gavel. Good God, I'm getting giddy.

Look at all the red (negative) numbers in the last column...

25. Did Newsweek poll the Diebold voting machines?
My guess is that the Smirking Chimp's flying ass-monkey minions still hold a comfortable (super) majority with the paperless black box demographic. These days, that's the only meaningful demographic in this eutrophying democracy.

It's not who casts the votes, but who counts them, that counts.

If the Rethugligans maintain control of Congress with polls like these, it's time to get mad AND get even. And get serious about taking our country back.

Edited on Sat Oct-07-06 02:07 PM by aquart
Because I don't. I think people are beginning to realize that if the incumbent loses in their area, it leaves the political possibilities in their area wide open for the ambitious but not yet ready. People who see themselves running in six years, say, or four.

Why would they keep a crumbling administration in power when its fall can lead to personal success? It's not like Bush can run again, so why not field a new Presidential candidate with shiny new congressional ones? Sure, the entrenched don't like it. But the grunts down below? This is their chance.

62. It's not who casts the votes,
Yes, the counters are the only ones who "count", so to speak.

We can get as giddy as we want to about the polls, but if the machines are hacked, what does it matter what the polls say?

I was giddy about all of this last weekend. Tonight I watched the video "Iraq for Sale" and it occurred to me that there is no way these corporations (KBR Halliburton, Titan, CACI, etc) are going to allow their pie-in-the-sky repukes lose control of the House or Senate, and risk losing their lucrative contracts.

Just no way.

4. The thing with the foley follies is that there is not anything the repukes
can point to that will be seen as an accomplishment? Are they going to point to Iraq? That's a worse scandal. Are they going to point to repukes making sure people have health care??? you gotta be kidding.
Maybe they can point out that only one congressman has had to resign due to pedophilia, other repukes (what is it, two or three so far?) had to resign due to bribery charges. That ought to inspire people to trust them again. or maybe not.

52. Totally agree--Rightwingers should be disappointed too.
I agree that the Repukes can point to zippo as an accomplishment. They certainly can't point to their handling of the Katrina disaster or Iraq or even Afghanistan for that matter. Not only that, but for the people who supported them from the right with the hopes of ending abortion or getting their anti-gay, anti-marriage amendment passed--too bad! (They'll probably roll those issues out again just in time for 2008--that and the fear card. Wonder if they ever feel used?) Well, anyway, I guess no one is probably too happy. The GOP is the party that can't getter done despite controlling everything...

16. As mush as I love polls
Ignore this shit and FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT

Make more calls, knock on more doors, donate another $25 to your favorite rep or Senator who is tied or slightly down, put up another yard sign, stick on another bumper sticker, sign another petition online, write one more letter to the editor, call one more talk show, write one more Congressman telling them of your disgust in their performance, show up to one more rally, buy one less thing from Wal-Mart, buy one more book that tells the truth (Such as Woodward's book...just picked up last night.)

Fucking fight harder and longer now then ever before. I spent three hours yesterday calling some of the national Christian talk shows. (Yeah, you have to listen for a few minutes before you get on the air.) I posed as a Republican true believer. Once on I was very courteous and low key. I simply said I was a Christian (which I am) and that I was thoroughly disgusted by the Republican leadership. How everyone should be tremendously embarassed by our leaders and how I will not be voting for one of them this year. If I can get one of those fundy listeners to throw in the towel and stay home on election day it was worth my time calling.

You can do the same. Forget the national shows liek Rush and Hanitty. You'll never get on. Call your local talk show hosts and tell them how you feel.

37. Both phone polls and exit polls are probably underestimating Democratic
strength. Many Republicans who support the party in phone polls won't be able to stomach getting out to vote, and many who do vote will pull the lever for Dems and then tell exit pollsters they voted Republican.

Looking good!!!!

20. Saw this on MSNBC this morning...
They had a reporter from Newsweek on...unbelievable and great news for Dems! Repugs are now way behind the Dems on EVERY issue; even national security and moral values they are ahead by a good margin.

One thing that really pissed me off, though, was that the dude from Newsweek said (paraphrased, but not much) "the GOOD news is is that there is still four weeks to the election and there is still time to turn this around." No qualifying it with "good news for Republicans" or anything else...I mean, WTF?!?

I'll give him some slack...maybe he just misspoke accidentally, but the news anchor (can't remember her name) should at least have attempted to correct him with "good news for Republicans, at least" or something.

27. Doesn't matter-- they know they can steal elections by combining methods
and if each method (suppression, misdirection, millions of ballots uncounted, a few computer "repairs") just invalidates a few thousand votes, it can be dismissed because it "won't change the final outcome." And they'll be sure to float some issues like Guns and Gays and do some outrageous campaign tricks for the media to discuss as the reason they just somehow managed to win another election even though the polls showed them sure to lose. We watched it all happen in 2004-- reports of outrageous vote manipulation coming in from all over the country-- and still the dribs and drabs method succeeded very well-- the TV pundits were talking guns and gays and campaign tactics because chasing dowm discrepancies would expose the reporters to charges of chasing down petty problems-- 1,000 votes here, 800 there-- they "wouldn't change the final outcome"-- except a few months later when the discrepancies are added up and you realize that over a million votes were uncounted-- and golly gee, just a silly coincidence that so many more were lost in Democratic districts... So HEY, WHO CARES IF THEY ARE TANKING? They can use the DRIBS AND DRABS METHOD again and again...

Yes, the more major crimes attached directly to Bush/Cheney are being ignored because of a SEX scandal.
They have no connection to Foley's follies, so they will distance themselves from it, and walk away, ignored by the Corp. Media, they'll hide behind the curtain and plan for their real October surprise.

50. Can't quite celebrate yet
You're right. We should be outraged about Gitmo and "signing statements" and the war in Iraq and warrantless wiretaps and the whole panoply of examples showing Bush to be a lawless president who "hates our freedoms."

But it's still a bit more than four weeks to go, and if a sex scandal is what it takes to flip both houses of Congress so be it. I'll be hoping for bad news for the Republicans every day between now and Election Day.

And if we what hope comes to pass, before we even start making demands on the new leadership to start cleaning up the mess and launching some investigations, let's be very worried about an out of control lame duck session where Republicans will try to ram through all sorts of things while they still can.

IF we make it to January impeachment shouldn't be the first order of business, but it shouldn't be ruled out entirely. When Congress starts investigating the sorts of things they've ignored for the last several years, there's no telling what will we turn up that we don't know about yet.

51. Just because they say it doesn't make it true.
"..the president’s approval rating has fallen to a new all-time low for the Newsweek poll: 33 percent, down from an already anemic 36 percent in August. Only 25 percent of Americans are satisfied with the direction of the country, while 67 percent say they are not.."

The talking points are not working. Everyone is talking about the Foley scandal, despite the belief by some Minnesota GOP officials who say Minnesotans "are more interested in baseball".

Just because they say it doesn't make it true.

Republicans are more interested in staying in power and winning elections than common sense, and the reason why is they mere political tools of many many special interests who are making a FORTUNE with taxpayer dollars. Even worse, these special interests and their wheeling/dealings have little or no accountability. Proof of whom one of these special interests are can be seen by the low gas prices here in October. Obviously oil executives want GOP Congressmen and Senators stay in power. The industry is "doing their part" to keep them there.

More proof that all Republicans really care about is their power is the lack of oversight regarding Iraq War defense contractors. There is a reported 9 billion dollars missing, and hardly a whisper about that from the Republican leadership.

Do only the Democrats care that there's 9 billion dollars MISSING in Iraq?

That is exactly what the Foley scandal exposes; obvious problems are not addressed by Republican leadership because Republicans want to stay in power.

Republicans have failed our Nation.

53. Just think
of how much resources and money will be freed up when we kill off the "25 percent of Americans are satisfied with the direction of the country." Have fun in hell y'all. Our average national IQ will go up by probably 30 pints too.

56. I though Bush hit as low as 29%
He's been rolling along down there for over a year now, bouncing around a little, but that's about it.

This is truly a presidency who's legacy will last for ages. It will set the gold, hell, PLATNIUM standard for all of the worst qualities of partisan politics, rubber-stamping legislators, cronyism, betrayal, distain for both science and plain old common sense, and embracing of both Christian and corporate fundamentalism.

59. Sorry, forgot. So many to keep track of.
We need like a deck of cards with a scandel theme to them, like they used for finding all of Saddam's henchmen.

Is 52 cards enough?

66. A set of 5,200 cards would not suffice to top the (snow's) 'number'
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 09:29 AM by Amonester
of American citizens who lost their lives because this totally corrupt Republican mis-administration simply didn't (and still doesn't) give a flying **** about them all being alive and well today, as 99% of 'em probably would if the Republicans weren't so criminally negligent or "else" (9 11 = LIHOP at the very least: 2,500+ dead)(Iraq = based on a pack of lies: 2,500+ dead) (Katrina = Gulf States & New Orleans: 1,000+ dead).

(I was just adding to your thoughts so, no need to be sorry here: there R so many victims of this evil misadministration that it's impossible to list them all.)

68. The "Jesus Camp" Christians will stick with Bush until Armageddon
They are fanatics that reject science and reason, and they vote Republican because they think that's what Jesus wants them to do.
