Striking new bird discovered in South America

A brightly coloured bird has been discovered on a remote mountain range in South America. The previously unknown species, the Yariguies Brush Finch, has striking black, yellow and red plumage.

A British expert co-led the team which made the find during the first biological expedition to the Yariguies mountains in northern Colombia.

Ms Blanca Huertas, a curator at the Natural History Museum in London, said: "The description of a new bird is a rare event in modern times."

potential to his natural environment or he'll be extinct before they can get him into all the bird books...........

7. Let's kill it in the name of Jay-Zeus!
We all know that are flying creatures were created at the same time, birds and pterodactyls alike, about 5,000 years ago.

16. you are wrong -- this is a live bird
Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 07:38 PM by pitohui
they make a point of saying this is the first species to be accepted by science without taking a specimen, they can now take the DNA sample and release the bird alive and well

as the other poster says, they are holding the bird by the feet, you would be surprised at how good some of these bird banders get at holding birds

15. Looks like it's being held by the feet...
Probably caught in a mist net. Looks like it's recoiling a bit away from the person holding it. It's not perched of its own will to my eye, so I'd guess it's not hand trained.

then it would be pecking the shit out of that guy's hand.

23. You would be VERY suprised
at how docile some birds can be while being banded... and how NASTY some other birds can be.

The sheer thought of cardinals makes me want to cry.

30. I had a cat pierce my skin there once...
My dad and I found him, with a badly mangled leg, when I was a kid. We looked for the owner, but couldn't find one in the neighborhood. So we took care of him until we could find the owner. He didn't like getting his pill...

a fair sampling of DU's "bird people"?

I'm sitting here explaining aloud that people have found a beautiful new bird -- to my parrot.
