Army Launching `Army Strong' Ad Campaign
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=2545880

In its battle to win the hearts and minds of recruiting-age Americans, the Army is replacing its main ad slogan "An Army of One" with one it hopes will pack more punch: "Army Strong."

The new approach, the fruit of a $200 million-a-year contract with a major advertising agency, was announced Monday by Army Secretary Francis J. Harvey. He said "Army Strong" will be the centerpiece of a multimedia ad campaign to be launched Nov. 9, timed to coincide with Veterans Day weekend.

Army officials acknowledge that recruiting during wartime is difficult, particularly with the Iraq war grinding on far longer than Bush administration officials expected and U.S. troops dying in battle almost every day.

"There's no question that we want to have a marketing boost right now, it's important to us," said Lt. Gen. Robert L. Van Antwerp, who oversees the recruiting effort as commander of U.S. Army Accessions Command.

The Army missed its recruiting target in 2005 by the widest margin in more than two decades, but bounced back this year to reach its goal of signing up 80,000 new soldiers, in part by offering bigger financial incentives, increasing its cadre of recruiters and making more use of Web sites to reach young people. It also has accepted more applicants with lower-tier scores on aptitude tests.

1.  I love the ones where the kid says "I can go to college..."
and all I can think of is "kid, you'll be in Iraq so fast it will make your head spin."

to articulate a simple concept... The army reduced to Tarzan and Jane speak! Love it!

3. The Army: Cannon Fodder!
our mission: "driving around waiting to get blown up."

kids of america: DON'T JOIN UP.

As I was walking down the road,
A feeling fine and larky oh!
A recruiting Sergeant came up to me,
Says he "You'd look fine in khaki, oh!
For the King he is in need of men,
Come read this proclamation oh!
A life in Flanders for you then,
Would be a fine vacation now."

2. "That maybe so," says I to him,
"But tell me sergent Dearie-oh!
If I had a pack stuck upon me back,
Would I look fine and cheerie oh!
For they'd have you train and drill until
They had you one of Frenchies oh!
It maybe warm in Flanders,
But it's draughty in the trenches oh!"

3. The Sergeant smiled and winked his eye,
His smile was most provoking oh!
He twiddled and twirled his wee moustache,
Says he, "I know your only joking oh!
For the sandbags are so warm and high,
The wind you won't feel blowing oh!"
Well I winked at a colleen passing by,
Says I, "What if it's snowing oh!"

4. "Come rain or hail or wind or snow,
I'm not going out to Flanders oh!
There's fighting in Dublin to be done.
Let your Sergeants and Commanders go.
Let Englishmen fight English wars,
It's nearly time they started oh!
I salute the Sergeant a very good night!"
And there and then we parted oh!

4. glad i was in the good old 60's army
we did it all back then, no haliburton to feed us or supply water and bunkers and housing, and fuel. we did almost all of it with soldiers.
a better name for bush's army is THE GUTTED ARMY. he gutted the army like he gutted all government agencies.

5. Another $200,000,000/year thrown down the buttomless gutter
by the dicktatorturer's junta (to their inner-circle).

All the while, nearly 50,000,000 Americans don't have any health insurance...

6. "Army of One" is incredibly stupid. War is a collective experience/effort
The National Guard armory by RFK stadium in Washington has big billboards about how you and your family can have health insurance if you sign up. No wonder we don't have single-payer healthcare!

like as in it's dumb/funny.

Some kid doesn't like the idea of buying a minivan so he goes and joins the Army.

26. One option left ...
"Draft"!

Let's face it, if they still can't meet their recruitment goals
with the barrel-scrapings that "Army Strong" appeals to, they'll
have no other option.

30. Not so... there are always mercenaries!
Amazing how many people will fight when they are offered five times what a line soldier makes!

Now, it seems to me that when a powerful and advanced nation has to resort to hiring mercenaries to fight wars it can't get it's own people to fight, things are pretty damn dire. Either the powerful and advanced nation is fighting such a poor, bad, useless war that nobdoy wants to fight, or that powerful advanced nation is on the verge of becoming a weak, mediocre nation.

22. I've already been treated to them. Sort of a handy test market
a few "army strong" commercials have played on afn-europe.

"army proud.army tough.army strong"

with pictures of soldiers in the "act" of "armying"

all I can think when I catch one is "army dead"

they have outdone themselves. I guess this is to match their new 'low standard army'.

31. Took the words right out of my mouth.
$200m of taxpayers' money in return for "Army Strong" and a run of ads guaranteed to get more of our kids killed.

I'm sure there's a victory party going on somewhere, but it ain't in Iraq.
