33 Katrina victims still unidentified
NEW ORLEANS - The bodies of 65 Hurricane Katrina victims remain unclaimed by family members more than a year after the storm, and three dozen are still unidentified, the Orleans Parish coroner said Thursday.

In all, more than 1,300 bodies were collected in Louisiana after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita battered the region last year. Of those, 33 remain unidentified as investigators exhaust DNA and other tests, said coroner Frank Minyard.

--

The bodies are being stored in refrigerated trailers and a warehouse near the Louisiana Superdome.

Minyard said there are no plans to bury the unclaimed remains for at least another year. He said he hopes that a Katrina memorial will eventually be built to remember the tragedy and provide a final resting place for the bodies that haven't been identified or claimed.

2. This is a problem
For those people that don't have any living family members or loved ones and who are alone.....how do we make sure that they are acknowledged?

This points out another glaring problem in times of disaster...every American needs to be accounted for...this is truly sad...

6. 33 people apparently without friends or
family to claim them. I hope they will eventually be afforded a dignified burial. I'm sure the Bush Crime Family will fight like hell to keep a Katrina memorial from ever being built. If New Orleans does erect one, I hope they remember to include a statue of Bush sharing birthday cake with McCain or playing the guitar while thousands died.

7. or their friends/ family all died
before katrina, people in louisiana were more likely to be living in the same area as their grandparents as in any other state, if everyone who knew them well was killed, who could claim them? keep in mind EVERY home in st. bernard parish was destroyed, almost every home in lakeview and new orleans east was destroyed, most of gentilly was destroyed -- all of these had families who had lived on the spot for generations

there was money and materials put aside -- 180K for a katrina memorial -- the day the materials were dropped off, they were stolen

high level organized crime, no doubt, bfee -- to be honest -- i wouldn't be surprised

i have the photo of bush and mccain eating birthday cake on my personal private webpage, fuck them, i wish i believed in the hell they deserve
