Abramoff Figure Rep. Ney to Plead Guilty
October 12, 2006, 6:34 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- Pressed by Republican House colleagues to resign, Rep. Bob Ney is the first congressman to fall in the Jack Abramoff influence-peddling case, a controversy that has reached the Bush White House and Capitol Hill.

In his sixth term, Ney is to enter a guilty plea Friday to a pair of felonies that could send him to prison for up to 10 years.

Ney signed papers a month ago admitting to charges of conspiracy and making false statements, acknowledging that he had deprived the public of his honest services.

The Ohio congressman says he took tens of thousands of dollars worth of trips, sports tickets, campaign contributions, meals and casino chips in exchange for legislation and public statements supporting Abramoff's clients and a foreign businessman.

With the Justice Department recommending 27 months behind bars for Ney, the congressman may announce his decision to step down when he appears before U.S. District Judge Ellen S. Huvelle, an appointee of President Clinton.

Ney Sentencing Set For Friday
Posted Thursday, October 12, 2006 ; 09:11 PM

Stick with 7News for the results.

Story by Jim Forbes Email | Bio

The sentencing for Ohio Congressman Bob Ney of the 18th Congressional District will take place Friday at 10a.m.

This, after Ney pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges. Despite the pressure for him to step down from his current seat in congress, Ney remains a house representative for his district. Shortly after his plea, Ney entered an alcohol treatment program for his "dependency on alcohol." 7News will be there for his sentencing and have the most complete coverage of the congressman's sentencing.

he is falling on the sword to protect the really guilty by avoiding any testimony in his case.

Ney's district in southeast Ohio was designed to be safe for Republicans, but polls show Democrat Zack Space leading the Republican who won a special election to replace Ney on the ballot, State Sen. Joy Padgett of Coshocton.

Ads placed by Space and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee highlight Padgett's ties to Ney, who asked her to seek the job this summer when he dropped his re-election bid, as well as her office supply company's default on a $700,000 government loan.

On Thursday, the DCCC unveiled a corruption-themed Web site at www.thepadgettpage.com...

"If you look at my previous campaigns, I always come from behind," Padgett said. "The only poll that counts is on Election Day."...
