Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio) will formally resign from the House today, according to two House GOP sources.

Ney Pleads Guilty, Will Resign From House

Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio) formally pleaded guilty in federal court today to charges of conspiracy and making false statements and announced that he will officially resign his House seat.

http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/1160728597111540.xml&coll=2

...Ney's district in southeast Ohio was designed to be safe for Republicans, but polls show Democrat Zack Space leading the Republican who won a special election to replace Ney on the ballot, State Sen. Joy Padgett of Coshocton.

Ads placed by Space and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee highlight Padgett's ties to Ney, who asked her to seek the job this summer when he dropped his re-election bid, as well as her office supply company's default on a $700,000 government loan.

On Thursday, the DCCC unveiled a corruption-themed Web site at www.thepadgettpage.com...

"If you look at my previous campaigns, I always come from behind," Padgett said. "The only poll that counts is on Election Day."...

That's just what I thought when I heard the news this morning...complete with Freddie Mercury singing it in my head. :D

I think that should be the Democrats' theme song for this election, or perhaps as a medley with "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions."

10. This report is wrong- He'll resign in "next few weeks"
Ney To Resign in "Next Few Weeks"
By Paul Kiel - October 13, 2006, 11:06 AM
Rep. Bob Ney's lawyer Mark Tuohey said in court this morning during his guilty plea hearing that Ney will not be resigning from Congress immediately -- but rather "in the next few weeks."

Tuohey said the delay came because Ney had some “constituent issues he wanted to tie up” and also wanted to ease the transition for his congressional staff. Tuohey didn't offer a specific date. Ney himself did not speak during the hearing, except to say "Yes" or "No," or "I plead guilty, your honor."

The judge set Ney's sentencing for January 19th. Ney faces a maximum of ten years, but prosecutors have said that they'll recommend a sentence of 27 months.

Tuohey also asked that Ney be considered for alocohol treatment while in prison. Ney's been in an alcohol rehab facility since he pled guilty September 15.

Ney will hang on as long as he can to keep that paycheck coming, then resign right before they throw him out. If he resigns he gets to keep his pension.

14. resignation of bob ney
As I was driving towards Oklahoma City yesterday, I had the displeasure of listening to Bill O'Reilly's radio show, and there was a caller who was complaining about all of the corruption in Congress, especially with regard to the Republican party. This caller mentioned the name of Bob Ney, and immediately O'Reilly snapped that he had never heard of Bob Ney, didn't know what political party he belonged to, and did not know why Ney was in trouble. Guess this is not surprising for the same guy whose television show had Foley labeled as a Democrat

Edited on Fri Oct-13-06 10:55 AM by LetsThink
.....Under the Rs, the Justice Department is doing a LOT of pretty weird stuff. Like:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/13/opinion/13fri1.html?th=&emc=th&pagewanted=print

.....giving companies free reign to run rough-shod over anti-trust laws, crushing consumers... Again and again the American middle class is getting the squeeze. Pretty soon there just won't be nut'n left ....

40. Right. Consider Abramoff. Two prosecutors have been promoted
and, as yet, Abramoff hasn't done a day in jail. Supposedly, he's giving the gummit something in return. We'll see. The only speedy prosecution that's taken place was Cunningham - he set a land speed record. As for the rest, mostly they fade away to "spend more time with their family." There has been precious little justice. Seems the goper-crooks broke all the branches of government.

45. Is there strategy in waiting to resign?
Is there anything to the thought that having Ney not resign immediately gives GOPers the chance to vehemently call for his resignation? Can they turn this into a moral victory by going after another "renegade" Republican? Of course he is going to resign, he plead guilty to charges of bribery. By not immediately resigning he generously bared his back for an embattled Speaker and House leadership mired in other controversies to show America what they do to "bad" Republicans. "Bad" meaning those who get caught.

Can Bob Ney become a straw man for "family values" Republicans?
