U.S. starts plan to help Hamas opponents

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The United States has quietly started a campaign projected to cost up to $42 million to bolster Hamas's political opponents ahead of possible early Palestinian elections, say officials linked to the program.

The plan to promote alternatives to Hamas includes funding to help restructure President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah group and provide training and strategic advice to politicians and secular parties opposed to Hamas Islamists.

"This project supports (the) objective to create democratic alternatives to authoritarian or radical Islamist political options," said one official U.S. document obtained by Reuters.

The U.S. campaign coincides with signs that Abbas is considering sacking the government led by Hamas, which defeated Fatah in January elections, in a process that could lead to a new parliamentary vote.

Oh, I'm sure THAT will do wonders for the aforementioned Hamas opponents' electoral prospects. NOT!

Don't they usually call this interference by a foreign power? It'd be illegal if either party accepted this funding in the United States, wouldn't it?

6. It would be cheaper just to pay them not to run for office.

Give each of the Hammas candidates five million dollars and a plane ticket anywhere in the world.

They're also a lot less likely to get assassinated, too.
