7. Even if it wasn't a nuke test
After all the hysteria they couldn't back down! How do you get sanctions against a country for using dynamite? We HAVE to cling to the nuke story.

10. Since the "US" lies about everything, it's likely it wasn't a nuke.
We can assume from the statement that no radiation has been detected.

11. CNN story now up - here's the link
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/10/13/nkorea.test.sample/index.html

Source: U.S. has evidence of radioactivity from N. Korea
From Jamie McIntyre
CNN Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The United States has evidence of radioactivity from a site where North Korea was suspected of conducting a nuclear weapons test, a U.S. official said Friday.

The official said the evidence is preliminary, but if it is confirmed, the United States will be in a position to confirm North Korea's claim on Monday that it successfully set off a nuclear blast for the first time.

The report appeared to contradict a CNN report earlier Friday from two U.S. government officials with access to classified information that an initial air sampling over North Korea showed no indication of radioactive debris. (Watch report on U.S. air-sampling on day after claimed blast -- 1:12)

16. Well, I guess we will leave them alone now. Might as well.
What sanctions were trying to avoid has already happened. We need to make friends and keep an eye on them. If they have no enemies among world nations, why would they nuke anyone?

22. I am disinclined to call it a failure
especially considering it actually exploded. Even if it was a suboptimal yield, it certainly flattened out the learning curve quite a bit and; what's more, there really isn't enough evidence to confirm that the yield was suboptimal IHMO.

28. Even if Only the Conventional Explosive Exploded, There'd Be Radiation
The force of the explosion would spread the radioactive material around a bit.

You don't need that much conventional explosive to detonate a chunk of Plutonium

20. This is another spinning topic
I can't say who the hell is telling the truth or if once again we will ever know the truth . As you are aware they (whom ever they are) can build up info to suit a mission or a plan .

I would not put it past anyone to dump a bit of radioactive waste out there just to get a reading .

30. We're already doing all that can be done, short of a total naval blockade
I think ten years of absolute seige would completely undermine Kim's power structure but China would surely fuck it up for us. We should just blockade them with naval assets for a decade or so then. We should definitely ensure that we have allies donating naval resources to the cause too. Japan seems pretty willing to play hardball and that's no surprise. I also wonder what would happen if we got Taiwan involved somehow?
