Bush Presses U.N. on N. Korea Sanctions

By DEB RIECHMANN

WASHINGTON Oct 14, 2006 (AP)— President Bush urged the U.N. Security Council
to pass a resolution Saturday that would clamp nonmilitary sanctions on North
Korea for the nuclear test it claims to have conducted earlier this week.

"By passing such a resolution, we will send a clear message to the North Korean
regime that its actions will not be tolerated," Bush said Saturday in his weekly
radio address.

"With its actions this week, the North Korean regime has once again broken its word,
provoked an international crisis and denied its people the opportunity for a better
life," Bush said. "We are working for a resolution to this crisis."

(Democratic response)

"Under President Bush and this Republican Congress' watch, our country has become
less safe both domestically and abroad," said Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Pa. "We have
seen the number of terrorist attacks increase around the world. We have seen North
Korea and Iran two members of the president's axis of evil enhance their nuclear
weapons capabilities."

Delivering the Democrats' weekly radio address, Murphy also criticized the president
for his policy regarding Iraq.

6. Bush cut school lunches and social programs here
Why not force even more North Koreans to starve to death? He loves killin' anyways.

I know this is not the most popular assessment but I see it like this. The Nuclear option is the only card the North Koreans have to play. They aren't an oil producer, they have nothing else that would force us to talk to them to give them aid. They've seen how diligent we are when people starve in Africa and they know we hate their government and because of our intolerance for anything short of a Democracy in non oil-bearing regions they have nothing to get us to negotiate aid for their people with.

Kim Jong Il is a tyrant for sure but one who has no plans to nuke anybody. Rather he just trumps this card up when they need more help for their energy and food crises. He needs to save face with his people that he can make the Americans help so he rattles his saber.

I think it was the Ambassador to the USSR at the time Tommy Thompson who came back to Kennedy and asked him to empathize with Nikita Khrushchev in the middle of the Nuclear showdown. He told him Khrushchev just wanted to save face with his people. Kennedy de-escalated and the entire Cuban Missle Crisis was resolved.

Saddam never even had WMDs but played like he did to protect his power. Had we understood this and listened to inspectors (or under this administration, cared what they even had to say) thousands of Iraqis might have lived instead of starved to death under previous sanctions.

We need to again empathize with our enemies and see what they are looking for in the broader context of the disputes we have with them.
