22. The Tornadoes were great.
I was listening to them on the way to work last week and was thinking about Doug Sahm. He and Freddy were great musicians that never got the kudos they deserved.

If you like the Tornadoes check out Los Super Seven. Fender, the guys from Los Lobos, etc. The first one is all Spanish Language except for Deportee by Joe Ely (the only gringo in the band). The last one, Heard it on the X, is the core band with a bunch of guest musicians covering songs played during the heyday of border radio, the illegal stations that played from Mexico into the US. Great music.

14. Rest in peace Mr Fender
Another great and talented musician gone. I remember listening to "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" several times in my dad's car and also on various CDs and tapes. He had a unique voice and an immense talent

Rest in peace Freddy Fender and thank you for your service to the world of music. You left it a better place

16. Baldemar Huerta used to live down the street from me.
In the Champions area of NW Houston off of Farm Road 1960.
Really upscale neighboorhood.

He parked his cars in the front yard and rode his Harley on the sidewalks.
Used to drive our conservative neighbors absolutely nuts. I was his only local friend.

Dug a pit in the backyard by the pool to roast goats, whole. Played music out there, loud.

Even though he had gone through nine kinds of Hell in his life, he always had this great big smile and was always ready to party. Always. God, I could tell some stories. The best one was when he lit a joint while these guys were refinishing his wood floors. Burned half his house down. Freddie thought it was the funniest thing he had ever seen.

Vaya con Dios, mi Amigo.

Because when all is said and done, it's your happiness that matters most of all....

17. "Free Baldemar Huerta" was the graffiti at the Hole in the Wall...
...down on the Drag in Austin, where Sahm and Freddie and Augie and the guys would come and do some low-key jamming on weeknights in the '80s and early '90s. I think it was a reference to the time he was jailed for pot in Louisiana.
