More than 3,000 Iraqi police sacked: ministry spokesman

Tue Oct 17, 8:18 AM ET

BAGHDAD (AFP) -
Iraq's National Police is being completely reorganized and over 3,000 officers have been dismissed, the Iraqi interior ministry spokesman has said.

Brigadier General Abdel Karim Khalaf told reporters at a press conference in the heavily fortified Green Zone on Tuesday that 1,228 had been sacked for breaking the law while nearly 2,000 more were dismissed for dereliction of duty.

"This restructuring was applied this week to the leadership of the National Police," Khalaf said. "The headquarters of the two divisions were dissolved and all brigades were brought directly under the commander of the National Police."

The National Police, which was formed out of the police commandos and the public order brigades, was hastily thrown together in 2004 to address security shortages and became notoriously infiltrated by militias.

"A total of 1,228 have been dismissed on orders of the interior minister for criminal acts and forgery and human rights violations and other issues," Khalaf said.

C'mon. The Iraqi government lies constantly. All the goddamn time. More than our own, as frightening as it seems. It pretends to take action, sets up committee, and then lies like a cheap rug.

These guys are militiamen or insurgents in their spare time anyway...firing them (Which I don't believe happened anyway) may or may not bolster said ranks. But it's kind of irrelevant given the social death spiral Iraq is experiencing.

This thing is a fucking tsunami and our psyops department routes us these puffaganda pieces to show "look we got our fingers in the dike..."

8. 3000 police are sacked as rulers remain cut off and impotent (new details)
New details about the imminent collapse of the Iraqi "government."

3,000 police are sacked as rulers remain cut off and impotent
From James Hider in Baghdad
THE Iraqi Government sacked 3,000 police officers for human rights abuses, corruption and complicity with militias yesterday.

The drastic action came only a fortnight after the authorities laid off an entire police brigade for aiding death squads.

Washington is increasingly looking to the Iraqi Government to take more responsibility for the country’s security. Yet its writ barely extends beyond the blast walls of the green zone in central Baghdad, let alone on to the streets of the capital.

In the US-protected fortress, Iraq’s Government huddles, riven by sectarian splits and cut off from its terrified people. Inside their bubble ministers live in comparatively luxurious compounds, each sectarian bloc divided from the next by barricades. They are hard to reach by telephone. Some spend more time outside the country than in it.

After just four months in office, the administration of Nouri al-Maliki, the Shia Prime Minister, has become a virtual Government-in-exile in its own country.

Even the cautious optimism of Western diplomats who never set foot outside a highsecurity compound is being tested. “I don’t pretend there is effective Government all over Iraq. Is that a result of the security situation or low capacity inside the ministers? Well, a bit of both — but quite a lot of the latter,” one told The Times.
