Steele tries to defy history in Maryland contest (Senate race) (no way!)
By Tom Curry

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - Will Michael Steele be the next Barack Obama? Hell no, say Democrats.

Steele, who, as the lieutenant governor of Maryland, is the highest ranking black person ever to serve in elective office in his state, is running an uphill battle to win the state’s Senate seat.

If Republican Steele defeats Democrat Ben Cardin, a 19-year House member, and Green-Libertarian-Populist candidate Kevin Zeese, he’ll join Obama as the second black member of the Senate, or perhaps the third, if Harold Ford, Jr. wins in Tennessee.

The Facts about Steele:
Steele the Lt Governor of Maryland has imposed $3 billion taxes on the people of Maryland over his time in office and has put the budget in the red. Steele, an African American tries to pretend he is not a Republican by putting out posters and literature with Steele, Democrat, trying not to say that he is linked to Bush or with the hope that black people will vote for him. When asked what he would do about the budget he said he didn't know! All this info can be found in Washington Post and Baltimore Sun. If you want to see what Mayor O'Malley has to say about his and republican Gov Ehrlich's track record see http://www.martinomalley.com/content/498

1. I Sure Hope Cardin Beats Him
Unfortunately, I think Steele's ads are good and present him as a reasonable and sympathetic person. His ads are all personal -- Steele has had to run away from the issues and his own political history. Cardin, on the other hand, has had to go negative in order to bring up Steele's support for Bush on a number of key issues such as stem cell research and Soc Sec privatization. Negative advertising is inherently risky and I hope it's effective.

Erlich's victory over Kathleen Kennedy Townsend was a warning that Democrats should not think of any statewide office in Maryland as a sure thing.

2. This is Maryland
One of the bluest states in the country, Steele has no chance. The Republicans mistakenly thought that black voters would vote for Steele just because he's black and that's a very ridiculous thing to assume.

3. That's because they think black people are stupid
And although some of us are, the great majority of us know who Michael Steele is and we wouldn't vote for him if somebody paid us.

At the press conference, Tyson posed for photos with fans, signed autographs and campaigned for Maryland U.S. Senate candidate Michael Steele.
Tyson, wearing a white and blue Steele for U.S. Senate T-shirt, said he used to believe black Republicans were “sellouts.” But Tyson said he changed his mind after researching the Maryland lieutenant governor.

“We have to open our eyes more,” Tyson said, as he pointed to his T-shirt.

8. Rasmussen has Cardin 50%, Steele 43% as of last week
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/2006/State%20Polls/October%202006/MarylandSenate.htm

They didn't include Zeese in the poll, but he could shave a few points off Cardin's margin. Zeese is running against the war on drugs (his history is as a drug reformer) and the war in Iraq. Too bad Democrats can't embrace a progressive approach to illegal drug policy.
