(AP) Rep. John Sweeney asked the House Ethics Committee for guidance Wednesday after a published report said he did not properly report a 2001 trip with a lobbyist now cooperating in a federal investigation of congressional corruption.
Sweeney, R-Clifton Park, insisted he did not knowingly violate any rules, and said he wants to know if he should submit new paperwork about his reimbursed travel five years ago.

The congressman is in the midst of his most challenging re-election campaign, against Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand.
She has repeatedly accused Sweeney of ethical lapses, and said of the 2001 trip: "Its not clear what's worse: his failure to disclose that a criminal paid for his trip abroad or that he was willing to sing the praises of an island of sweatshops and child prostitution."
Sweeney spokeswoman Melissa Carlson said the congressman had been told the trip was paid for by the Marianas government, which is a U.S. territory. Lawmakers are not required to report travel paid for by the government.
