GOP candidate denies sending (voter intimidation) letters
Edited on Thu Oct-19-06 01:36 PM by brooklynite
LOS ANGELES - A Republican congressional candidate said Thursday that he was not personally involved in sending a letter warning Hispanic immigrants they could go to jail or be deported if they vote next month, a mailing that prompted a state investigation.

"I did not do this. I did not approve of any letter," Tan D. Nguyen, the GOP challenger to Democratic U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez (news, bio, voting record), told The Associated Press.

The investigation is focused on Nguyen's campaign, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to publicly discuss it. The Los Angeles Times and The Orange County Register also indicated the Nguyen's campaign was the target.

Nguyen said he believed an employee in his office might have used his voter data base to send out the letter without his knowledge. He said that employee has been "discharged."

Whomever bet on Someone in my office was to blame, but I knew nothing about it please come forward and claim your prize. If you bet on it's the fault of liberals and the media, better luck next time.

14. Shades of Orrin Hatch
whose staffers, on their own volition mind you, hacked into the judiciary committee's computer network and downloaded the files of Dems on that committee.

3. .
It's always the same. They never knew anything, never knew what was going on. But they surely do always find some unknown staffer who gets the blame. A single person who apparently did everything alone.

7. Here's where he trips himself up.
Read these sentences slowly, and see if you catch it.

1) Nguyen said he believed an employee in his office might have used his voter data base to send out the letter without his knowledge.

2) He said that employee has been "discharged."

So someone might have used his data base without his knowledge AND he fired 'that' employee?

Is it just me or does that not quite make sense?

Either he did or didn't and if you knew who it was, then why say you didn't have knowledge?

Then were did the money come from to mail these? I'm not sure how many they sent, but it adds up quick.
And if he doesn't know, then he doesn't know where he's money is going, isn't that not another problem?

21. "bad apples" don't fall far from the tree. no staffer would do this
unless they were pretty damn sure it was encouraged by the boss. just as no member of the armed forces would torture captives unless they were sure their commanding officer(s) approved it.

25. Calif. GOP Candidate Vows To Stay In Race (denies approving letters)

Calif. GOP Candidate Vows To Stay In Race

GARDEN GROVE, Calif., Oct. 20, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(AP) A Republican congressional candidate who acknowledged his campaign sent a letter threatening Hispanic immigrant voters insists he will stay in the race despite mounting pressure for him to step aside. State law enforcement agents began searching his offices on Friday.

Tan D. Nguyen, a Vietnamese immigrant trying to unseat a popular Mexican-American Democratic congresswoman, resisted calls on Thursday from leaders in his own party to quit the race. He said he had no prior knowledge of the letter that wrongly told thousands of Orange County immigrants they could be jailed if they voted.

“I did not do this. I did not approve of any letter,” Nguyen told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. He said he has since fired his campaign's office manager, whom he said helped produce the mailer.

(snip)

“Mr. Nguyen has no intention of dropping out of the race. He would do the public a disservice if he dropped out,” Wiechert said.

(snip)

“If it is in fact this guy (who sent the letter), the most disgusting and saddest thing about it is that it comes from another immigrant,” said Sanchez, who was born in the U.S. to Mexican parents. “These communities have spent years trying to get naturalized immigrants to vote.”
