NYT/Reuters: Top Republican (Boehner) Testifies in Sex Scandal
Top Republican Testifies in Sex Scandal
By REUTERS
Published: October 19, 2006

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top U.S. Republican testified on Thursday in the investigation of a Capitol Hill sex scandal, and afterward said the sordid affair was not hurting his party's chances of retaining control of the U.S. Congress in the November 7 elections.

"It does not appear to be affecting any of our races,'' House of Representatives Republican leader John Boehner said after emerging from a closed-door meeting with a congressional ethics panel. Boehner of Ohio said voters were more interested in such matters as taxes and national security....

A Time magazine poll earlier this month found that most Americans believe Republicans tried to coverup the matter. Yet others found people saying it will not impact their vote.

Boehner said he told the ethics panel privately what he had earlier said in public -- that he first learned about contact between Foley and a former page several months ago, and believes he informed House Speaker Dennis Hastert, an Illinois Republican.

Hastert, Boehner and other Republicans, however, insist they did not know about sexually explicit e-mails by Foley until they were disclosed on September 29 by ABC News....

3. A lot of people said it wouldn't affect their vote
because they were already planning to vote for the democrats. Duh.

Here we go, more of the TEARDOWN by the Corporate Media. What's gotten into them:

It’s all about SEX!!! Or is it???

2600 American soldiers killed in Iraq and ten times that many with serious injuries didn’t motivate the corporate media. $300 billion spent on Iraq barely got their attention. 200 thousand citizens of New Orleans still living away from home with few visible repairs to their city hardly merit a story.

But Mark Foley’s long term problem with sexual boundaries and minors causes the media to snap to and do their jobs for the first time in six years. Why sex?

If you wanted to disable a party and derail an agenda, what’s the quickest way to do that? Sex with minors might do it. The dominant theme of the Bush Republicans has been religious values, values which are strangely symbolized through their anti gay marriage position. They’ve gone to great lengths to get this issue on state ballots. They were gearing up to making this the center piece of their campaign once again. After all, what else can they run on: sound fiscal management, effective response to natural disasters, helping the poor? This was their issue and they owned it free and clear. But now that issue is in shambles and so is the Republican campaign to retain control of Congress. The Republican owned voting machine companies are going to be very busy from now thorough Election Day. Even that may not prove sufficient to save this crew. http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0610/S00155.htm
