Bush: US troops to remain in Iraq until 'terrorists' defeated

by Laurent Lozano Fri Oct 20, 3:38 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) -
President George W. Bush insisted that US troops would not pull out of
Iraq before "the terrorists are defeated," a day after acknowledging a possible parallel between violence there and the Tet Offensive during the US war in Vietnam.

The comments, coming less than three weeks before crucial elections, follow his acknowledgement on Wednesday that the current steep spike in violence in Iraq "could be" compared to the Tet Offensive, widely considered to be key to souring US public opinion on the Vietnam War.

"Our goal in Iraq is clear and unchanging. Our goal is victory," said Bush, speaking at a rally Thursday for embattled Republican congressman Don Sherwood in the town of La Plume, Pennsylvania.

"We are a nation at war, and we must do everything in our power to win that war," he said.

"We will not pull out our troops from Iraq before the terrorists are defeated. We will not pull out before Iraq can govern itself, sustain itself, and defend itself," he said.

1. Our goal in Iraq is clear and unchanging?
It seems until we kill every Iraqi we will not attain Bush's goal.

Bush calls it winning, I call it genocide.

6. Failing to learn from history
Didn't Hitler say the same thing about Stalingrad?

This seems to describe the JCS and the generals on the ground:
"Paulus' inability or unwillingness to save his men by taking a decision against the will of Hitler to extricate the army from an impossible position puts him in an historically unfavorable light."

And this sounds more and more like Iraq everyday:
"Paulus was refused permission to break out of the encirclement, and the 6th Army was consequently overrun together with its Romanian allies and Russian auxiliary troops when the lack of ammunition, equipment attrition and the physical health of the German troops prevented them from defending effectively against the Red Army in late January 1943."

I'm not saying that Bush is like Hitler, just looking at some of the similarities in their "leadership" styles.

7. .Bush's remarks appeared to put his Republicans on a slippery slope.

....Bush's remarks appeared to put his Republicans on a slippery slope.

Although Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld made a similar analogy in June 2004, the Bush administration has always shied from the comparison.

Nearly 60,000 Americans were killed in Vietnam.

Since the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003, 2,772 US troops have been killed, according to a
Pentagon tally. October already has proved to be one of the most deadly months for US forces with 73 dead.

Opposition Democrats have made Bush's handling of Iraq a major campaign issue, and opinion polls show public sentiment against the war is growing.

"The violence is indeed disheartening," said US military spokesman Major General Caldwell, speaking Thursday in Iraq. "In Baghdad alone we have seen a 22 percent increase in attacks during the first three weeks of (the Muslim holy month of) Ramadan as compared to the three weeks proceeding Ramadan."

9. When he was asked about the Tet offensive it was
clear from his response (something like "hmmm") that he had no idea what it was. The man is a dumbass who might as well be a parrot...."Bawk...defeat terrorists...win....bawk."

off the hook. A decent journalist would have phrased it , "Sir, what parallels can be drawn between the present situation in Iraq and the Tet offensive of 1968?"

Chimp is such a dipshit, he'd have probably come back with something like, "I didn't see no offensive tits in 1968. What are you talkin about?"

17. Bush, the new tyrant, has spoken.
US troops (who never had enough family 'connections' to keep them from being 'flown' overseas) to remain ('easy' targets) in Iraq until (Republican) 'terrorists' defeated.

More like the truth...
