Michigan Governor Surges in the Polls
Michigan Governor Surges in the Polls
Friday October 20, 2006 7:16 PM
By KATHY BARKS HOFFMAN
Associated Press Writer

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - With Detroit's auto industry closing factories and laying off workers in a desperate struggle to start making money again, the biggest turnaround story in Michigan could well be Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

The Democrat has pulled ahead in her bid for re-election, going from a near-tie this summer to an 8- or 9-point lead over Republican businessman Dick DeVos, despite the sour Michigan economy and the fortune DeVos has spent on ads telling voters he will get the state working again.

2. Great News, I really like her!
Anyone from Michigan, have you noticed any decrees in the amount of anti-Granholm "Negative Ads" lately?

3. latest Devos ad features his cutesy Jenna Bush type daughter
"Vote for my Dad! He's a great guy!"

Devos got a jump in the summer with millions of
bucks worth of ads. Then Granhom started
fighting back.
Now that people have seen him they are saying
"no thanks".

Devos came across in the debates with all the
gravitas of Mr Rogers and none of the warmth.

23. Republican running unopposed, is that a part of the 50 state strategy?
How can we allow that? It seems like the Democratic Party could at least pony up ten grand for signs for someone, anyone to run against the Republican..... I don't get it.

7. dick devos probably intended to get everybody in Michigan all
busy selling Amway. I bet, deep down, that's what he had in mind for getting the state working again. Good luck building your "downlines," folks.

8. She's done a good job pointing out that guys like Devos are the problem
with Michigan's economy. I think that the latest ad, with the whole thing about him incorporating in the Bahamas ("Where does DeVos think the governor's office should be-the Cayman Islands?") is helping, too.

10. Dick DeVos has had his ads on TV here forever!!!
Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 02:52 PM by vssmith
Some of his ads are clever, luckily he isn't. His biggest mistake was debating Granholm--he was toast.

His wife, who headed the Republican party in MI, said a couple of years ago, "The trouble with Michigan is that people here make too much money." I caution I may not have the words right even though I put it between quotes but the meaning is the same. Nice that people who inherit millions can whine about the wages of the people they want to exploit.

14. so were the 04 debates between the childish dumb shrub & kerry
and that didn't stop America from voting about half the ballots for him. I'm glad Michigan voters didn't fall for the W lie in 04. He was an embarrassing ass in the debates. I'm sure DeVos was worse.

I wouldn't say DeVos was worse -its quite hard to be worse than shrubby ;).
At least he didn't try to punch any of the moderators as Shrub seemed inclined to do in that one townhall meeting -which was found to be very masterful and manly by his supporters :eyes:

on ads for governor race. Too bad the money couldn't be spent on something useful.

25. Granholm rocks, and now it looks she's gonna roll, too :-)
Michigan is in a tough place, but not because of Granholm.

DeVos rings hollow...Granholm rings true. DeVos' passive wealth and shelter from life's hard choices make for massive disconnect with people here.

PS Hey DUers, buy a car made with American labor, k? Make Jennifer happy, and a lot of other people too.

Peace.
