Weldon labels Democrats 'un-American' in debate with opponent
SPRINGFIELD, Pa. - Republican Rep. Curt Weldon heatedly defended his public record and his children Friday in his first debate since an FBI probe of his activities became public earlier this week....

The lawmaker used his opening statement to blast the media for what he labeled as attacks on his children, and to criticize Democrats for an "outrageous and un-American" campaign flyer regarding his daughter's lobbying firm.

"No campaign has been worse than this one over the past five days," said Weldon, a 10-term incumbent.

Weldon was emotional and combative in the debate, saying he embraced his role as "the underdog."

Sestak used numerous statistics to try to show that it is time for a new congressman. Speaking in calm, measured tones, he cited figures that he said showed Delaware County losing businesses and jobs in the past few years. He also expressed concern about the millions of Americans who have no health insurance.

3. a conservative coworker of mine is voting Dem for the first time in Nov
besides being outraged about Katrina, he said the last straw was being labeled a "terrorst-appeaser" and "un-American" for daring to have questions about the war in Iraq. He says labelling people "anti-American" is the sign of politicians who are out of control and out of ideas. I completely agree.

17. Or, as Ambrose Bierce puts it:
"In Dr. Johnson's famous dictionary patriotism is defined as the last resort of a scoundrel. With all due respect to an enlightened but inferior lexicographer I beg to submit that it is the first." - The Devil's Dictionary

8. Quite a statement for a guy who is on the take from the Kremlin.
A guy with the following committee assignments:

House armed services committee
Tactical air and land forces committee
Projection forces subcommittee
Homeland security committee

A guy who attended and even spoke at Rev. Moon's "coronation" at the Senate office building.

Maybe Weldon should stop lashing out at his opponent and take a look in the mirror.

12. Guess that means that he thinks American's should
lie, cheat, steal, and not support the people they send to die for them. If that's the case, then I guess the Dems are not "american" enough for him.

15. I'm telling you...
Mark my words: If Weldon is in as bad trouble as the polls say he is, we're gonna pick up 100 seats. This guy was so entrenched in Delaware County that the only name that comes to mind in comparison is 'Kennedy' on Cape Cod. In all my years, I have only met a handful of residents who will admit to voting for his opponent. It's just unbelievable that he's losing.

21. We just might
Even the GOP's pollsters are talking about a 20-40 seat pick-up by the Democrats -- and a record turnout for a mid-term election. Dick Viguerie, Pat Buchanan, and the newly insightful Joe Scarborough are encouraging Republican bloodletting. Although Scarborough is not a popular man here at DU, he's probably the most lucid of the conservative pundits, and not just because he's saying things we like.

I have a slightly different take on all of this. This will be the first of several disastrous elections for the Republicans. The 100-seat swing won't take place this election, but over the next four elections, the Republican Party could lose well over 100 seats. And I wouldn't rule out a brief 200 seat shortfall if there are some particularly onerous scandals (and see below).

There's a lot of liberal anger, and it's coming at a time when 40 years of conservative cliché-mongering is failing like hard-ridden brakes on a street rod. The conservative movement is self-destructing.

And if so much as a single serious allegation of Republican election tampering can be proved, we can expect a massive exodus of Republican partisans and the probable birth of a third political party.

My Brand Spankin' New Fear: That we Democrats will trip over our own shoelaces before much meaningful change can be legislated.
