• Democrat Amy Klobuchar leads her male opponent, Republican Mark Kennedy, in the U.S. Senate race.

• For the first time, a woman will represent the 6th Congressional District. Republican Michele Bachmann is running against Democrat Patty Wetterling.

• In the Republican-leaning 2nd District, Democrat Coleen Rowley is working to topple Republican U.S. Rep. John Kline.

• In the 5th District, the Independence Party's Tammy Lee is waging a long-shot bid. Democrat Keith Ellison is the odds-on favorite to win.

1. They really did need to point out that someone named Mark is male.
I know you don't usually change headlines, Judi Lynn, but I just had to check for myself. Good grief. I understand they feel the need to stress that electing a woman would be a first in this district, but the wording looks stupid.

3. You bet! The untrained reader might just be tempted to think it's not
necessary to point out her opponent, Mark, is male! That wording was not exactly slick, was it?

Also perplexing was the idea of including the bullet point in the headline!

6. Mark Kennedy is a guy, a party guy.

It looks like Mark is having his children lie about his voting record.

A video about Mark Kennedy at youtube ...

11. I'm concerned that with the name Kennedy, people may think he's a Democrat
The mistaken belief that he's not a Republicker may earn him a few percentage points.

25. Do you think that's why Harold Ford is doing so well in Tennessee?
I'm pretty sure people are aware that there's more than one Kennedy family in the country.

18. "Makeover Mark" Kennedy? lol
He represented the 6th for three terms and has a 95% record of voting with Bush. Now he's claiming he agrees with the president because he independently come to the same conclusions Bush does, not because he's a follower.

Nobody's buying it. The local guys on our Air America affiliate call him an "empty suit". His ads are corny, too. I heard the GOP Senate re-election committee stoped spending money on him because he couldn't win.

8. Coleen Rowley is surging in the polls.

SurveyUSA now shows Rowley only down by 8%, rapidly closing in on Kline.

http://www.coleenrowley.com/blog/blog.php?bid=59

I agree with their assessment that SurveyUSA's methodology is flawed.
In my state (MD) SurveyUSA has twice shown the candidates for Senate tied,
no others do. I don't trust their results.

http://www.surveyusa.com/client/PollReportEmail.aspx?g=90e269a7-c39f-49c3-b63f-a51207b40149

'Rowley Gains Ground On Kline, MN 2 Seat No Longer 'Safe' For Republicans: In an election in Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District today, 10/16/06, Republican incumbent John Kline edges DFL challenger Coleen Rowley, 50% to 42%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KSTP-TV Minneapolis. Since an identical SurveyUSA KSTP-TV poll released 9/27/06, Kline has lost 5 points and Rowley has gained 7 points.'

Thanks for filling me in. Someone in the Ohio forum discredited the Survey USA survey on Brown vs. DeWine http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=172&topic_id=20094#20200

10. Survey USA's own methodology page shows...

http://www.surveyusa.com/methodology.html

"SurveyUSA studies may be conducted of any number of respondents, of any geography, and of any identifiable demographic population. Sample size is determined based on the specific objectives of a given research project. Results are minimally weighted to adjust for variations in the sample related to age, gender, race, number of adults and number of telephone lines in the household; or to specifications satisfying a specific research objective (i.e. demographic composition of a television-viewing time period)."

Even the freepers don't trust their results.

12. Barrons Magazine calls it for Kennedy (!?!)

because he has more "money" and "polish".

The TwinCities article doesn't say what the candidates' poll numbers are.

15. Yep
I haven't seen a poll showing this to be a real competetive race. I was worried about it at first, but c'mon when the GOP is in danger of losing VA, MO, and TN, they aren't going to be fighting for MN, especially after the disasterous job they have done over the last few years in that state (and nationwide of course).

16. isn't the twin cities hosting the GOP convention this year?
her and kennedy's ads play locally here, to the point of making me sick of both of 'em. trading barbs she said this, he said that.... but i think klobarshar is going to win this one. kennedy has taken on the underdog tone lately.

20. No, in '08. Needed time to arrange for more hookers
Both male and female; apparently the GOP likes it both ways. Good thing Sex World is open 24 hours a day. Corner of Washington and 2nd Ave. North in Minneapolis, Repubs. Three floors, no waiting! Just don't piss of Dimitri.

19. Barron's Magazine Motto: "We reject your reality and substitute our own!"
Amy has been polling in the mid-fifties, Mark in the mid-to-high thirties. And very little touch-screen black-box machines here, although they do apparently use an optical scanner.

21. I don't see how Barrons can say Kennedy will win
in the face of these kind of numbers. Polish, smolish.

DFL Senate candidate Amy Klobuchar continues to hold a substantial lead over her GOP rival Mark Kennedy, according to the latest Minnesota Poll, and there are signs that national Republican leaders are now turning their focus to other Senate campaigns.

The poll shows Klobuchar with 55 percent to Kennedy's 34 percent, a margin that is nearly the same as it was in September.

Kennedy's campaign challenged the poll results, as it has with every Minnesota Poll on the Senate race.
