NATO, Afghan Police Seize Pot, Opium
October 25, 2006

KABUL, Afghanistan -- NATO-led troops and Afghan police seized over nine tons of marijuana from a truck in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said Wednesday.

Four people in the truck were detained, NATO said. No date was given for the seizure in Zabul province, on a road between the southern city of Kandahar and Kabul.

n the country's west, U.S. and Afghan troops recovered over 120 pounds of opium from a car in Farah province, another NATO statement said Tuesday.

The U.S. soldiers were supporting an Afghan army checkpoint when a car failed to stop, the statement said. An Afghan soldier noticed a suspicious bag where the spare tire was supposed to be and alerted the next checkpoint, where the car was searched and the driver and passenger detained.

Good to see Afghanistan's agricultural economy is back on its feet. :sarcasm:

1. 120 pounds down another 6000 tons to go.
Even by War on Drugs standards, this isn't an earth-shattering bust.
In Afghanistan, this is a drop in the ocean.

2. "120 pounds of Opium"..........
WOW! While TONS of it go undetected right under their noses. Does this sound like a token bust, or what? :eyes: It's happened countless times in our "war on drugs". They'll sacrifice a few minor players and small seizures so their BIG shipments are left alone. A few headlines crowing about their commitment to eradicating the drug problem in exchange for billions of dollars worth that flood the market each year.
This is nothing more than the usual publicity stunt.
