Venezuela pulls out of UNSC race

Venezuela has decided to drop out of the hotly contested race for Latin America's open seat on the UN Security Council.

It has now asked Bolivia to run in its place against Guatemala.

"Last night, Venezuela's Ambassador called me first. Then commander Chavez called me and told me that since he was unable to get two-thirds for the Security Council, Caracas was giving up its candidacy for Bolivia," said Evo Morales, Bolivian President.

The US had backed Guatemala for the seat and had strongly opposed Venezuela's candidacy as the Leftist Chavez government is seen as anti-America.

Otto Reich, then assistant secretary of state for Western Hemispheric Affairs, met several times with coup leaders. Rogelio Pardo-Maurer, deputy secretary of defense for Western Hemispheric Affairs, met with military coup leader Gen. Lucas Romero Rincon. Cuban exile Reich and Pardo-Maurer were major players in the 1980s Contra war against Nicaragua. Pardo-Maurer was the Contras' most visible Washington spokesman back then and Reich was forced to resign from his job as head of public diplomacy in the Reagan administration's State Department for planting false stories in the U.S. media.

The CIA, through the National Endowment for Democracy and the United States Agency for International Development, bankrolled Chavez's opponents, and helped organize and support the strike by white collar oil workers and ships captains eight months after the coup collapsed.

Since then, the Bush administration has kept up a drumbeat of attacks. Rice warned that Chavez was "a major threat to the region." U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld compared Chavez to Adolph Hitler. Zoellick told senators that Chavez was part of a new "creeping authoritarianism." In March, a National Security Strategy document charged that Chavez was "undermining democracy." At an Oct. 2 meeting of Latin American defense ministers in Managua, Nicaragua, Gen. Bantz J. Craddock of the Southern Command called Chavez a "destabilizing" force in the region.

What really worries the U.S. is that Chavez is trying to diversify Venezuela's clientele. Venezuela is currently building a $335 million pipeline across Colombia in order to ship more oil to China, and is working on plans for a $20 billion natural gas pipeline through the Amazon and on to markets in Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina.

Given Chavez's enormous popularity in his country and elsewhere in Latin America, it is hard to see what the White House can do about Venezuela's president. But that is not likely to discourage it from trying, and the people the administration has recruited to target him are just the kind of operatives who won't shy away from anything up to, and including, the unthinkable: assassination.

6. Chavez knows the CIA would happily kill him asap

In the documentary of the first coup attempt against Chavez (The Revolution Will Not Be Televised), where the filmmakers had direct access, the second Chavez is taken away by the thugs so a new "leader" could be installed, one of his cabinet members turns to the camera sobbing and yells "We know the CIA is behind this!"

Then of course the people took to the streets and stormed the palace and got their elected leader back. They love him. Except for the super rich people of course.

But the CIA will keep trying. He represents everything they hate (power of people, human rights, a living wage, fair distribution of wealth,...)

It's wonderful seeing what was planned to be a decisive overthrow by complete a-holes fall apart because, despite their planning, and additional planning, and vigorous efforts, the PEOPLE found out in time to prevent it.

Amazing insider access to an attempted CIA coup. If the people were not so devoted to Chavez and/or were less courageous, there would be a US selected puppet government in place now. Just like in Guatamala.

CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez has a wide lead over his top contender as he seeks re-election in Venezuela's upcoming elections, according to a new poll.

The survey by Zogby International found 59 percent support Chavez, compared to 24 percent for the opposition's top candidate, Manuel Rosales.

The poll released Monday also dealt with Chavez's comments last month when he called President Bush "the devil" in a speech to the United Nations.

Asked generally about Chavez's U.N. speech, 36 percent said it made them proud of him as their president, while 23 percent said it made them ashamed. An additional 15 percent were indifferent, while 26 percent said they were either unfamiliar with the speech or unsure what to think about it.
