Mother mourns soldier she says never lost smile (also Fred Phelps issue)

"Daniel Winegeart's mother will think of her son's smile today during his funeral in Kountze's First Baptist Church.

-snip-

Support of the family might not be the intent of everyone in Hardin County today, however. Members of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., plan to protest at the funeral at 10:15 a.m., according to the church's Web site.

If the group is there, Kountze Police Chief Andrew Trahan said its members cannot protest lawfully. According to a city ordinance, a peaceful protest cannot occur without applying for a permit at least two days before the planned protest date. By Wednesday afternoon, Westboro Baptist Church had not applied for a permit, Trahan said.

The group, which demonstrated at Army Staff Sgt. Edward Reynolds' funeral in Beaumont on Oct. 7, asserts that God kills soldiers because of U.S. support of homosexuality."

I hated to give short shrift to the comments about Sgt Wingeart, but I think it will be intersting to see how Phelps and his bunch are treated if they show up and try to protest again. They weren't exactly warmly received earlier this month in Beaumont, and I'd love to see the Hardin County Sheriff's Dept actually arrest them for violating the city ordinance. Bastards.

(and sorry if not LBN)

3. The PGR, by its bylaws, does not take a political party stand. . .
nor is it a protest group.
