One day US Iraq death toll climbs to eight
(AFP)

BAGHDAD - A total of six US marines and two sailors were killed in one day in western Iraq, the US military said on Thursday, bringing the American death toll for the month to its highest level in a year.

The troops were all killed Wednesday in Anbar province of western Iraq, their deaths pushing the number of fatalities already this month to 99, the highest total since October 2005.

All died “from injuries sustained due to enemy action,” according to US military statements, which gave no further details except to say that the sailors were attached to a naval construction regiment.

U.S. death toll in Iraq worst in a year

By QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 51 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The number of American troops killed in
Iraq in October reached the highest monthly total in a year Thursday after four Marines and a sailor died of wounds suffered while fighting in the same Sunni insurgent stronghold.

The U.S. military said 96 U.S. troops have died so far in October, the most in one month since October 2005, when the same number was killed. The spike in deaths has been a major factor behind rising anti-war sentiment in the United States, fueling calls for
President Bush to change tactics.

The deadliest month for U.S. forces in Iraq was November 2004, when military offenses primarily in the then-insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, 40 miles west of Baghdad, left 137 troops dead, 126 of them in combat. In January 2005, 107 U.S. troops were killed.

Polls show a majority of Americans are opposed to Bush's handling of Iraq, and at a news conference in Washington on Wednesday, Bush indicated he shared the public's frustration even as he pushed back against calls for troop withdrawals.

7. Five U.S. troops killed in Iraq
By Ibon Villelabeitia

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on Thursday five more American troops were killed in Iraq, bringing the U.S. death toll for October to 96, as President George W. Bush faced mounting election-year pressure over the war.

With less than two weeks before Nov 7. polls in which his Republican party risks losing control of Congress, a survey released on Thursday found about 50 percent of likely voters believe U.S. troops should be pulled out of Iraq by the end of 2007, including 15 percent who favor an immediate withdrawal.

The Reuters/Zogby poll also found that 41 percent agreed that troops should remain "until the situation is stable."

Underscoring the challenges an increasingly impatient Washington faces in building Iraq's forces to allow it to send its 140,000 troops home, gunmen ambushed an Iraqi police convoy in a town north of Baghdad on Thursday, killing eight policemen, including the commander, police said.

US casualties surge as Bush vows victory

by Dave Clark 10 minutes ago

BAGHDAD (AFP) - The number of US troops have killed in
Iraq hit its highest monthly toll in a year on Thursday, as American soldiers scoured war-torn Baghdad for a kidnapped comrade.

The news that six US marines and two sailors died Wednesday came after US
President George W. Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki insisted their plan to pacify the country was on track.

The deaths brought the number of GIs killed in the first three and half weeks of the month to 99 -- more than at any time since October 2005 -- as US troops faced tough fighting in several regions.

Meanwhile, at least eight Iraqi policemen were killed in battles with insurgents near Baquba north of the capital, police and medical sources said.

US military spokesman Major William Caldwell attributed the spate of US deaths in western Iraq to an intense battle to recapture the city of Ramadi from insurgents.

23. I'm impressed with the man in the background in the white shirt,
and especially with the expression on his face.

It's as if he's saying to himself, "In the next life I will not be in the Tigris-Euphrates Valley at all, but in an olive grove in central Greece, on a sunny day, the sky bluer than blue, a quiet wind..."

11. What Bush is thinking, "Every new American death brings us that
...much closer to victory in Iraq!"

What is the reality, "Every new day means more American deaths and brings the Administration that much closer to cut and run in Iraq!"

Stop this megalomaniac George W. Bush now.
