Schwarzenegger keeps big lead over Angelides; Prop 84 falling short
LAT: Schwarzenegger keeps a big lead over Angelides, poll finds
Respondents lean toward approving four of five bond measures. Prop. 84 is falling short.
By Michael Finnegan and Peter Nicholas, Times Staff Writers
October 26, 2006

MONTEREY — State Treasurer Phil Angelides has failed to narrow Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's double-digit lead in the contest for governor, and Californians are leaning toward approval of all but one of the $43 billion in bond measures on the state's Nov. 7 ballot, according to a poll released Wednesday.

The findings by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California came as Schwarzenegger campaigned for the bond issues in Monterey, the Santa Barbara area and San Pedro, while Angelides lashed out at the governor outside a fire station in Sacramento.

The poll found that Proposition 84, a $5.4-billion package of water and conservation projects, fell short of majority support (42% for, 43% against)....The Republican governor, who has stressed the environment in his reelection ads, campaigned for Proposition 84 for the first time Wednesday at the Monterey Aquarium and a San Pedro park, both scenic sites meant to convey the stakes involved on the November ballot. U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat also seeking reelection, plans to stump for the measure today in San Francisco.

In the race for governor, the poll found Schwarzenegger leading Angelides by 48% to 30% — statistically unchanged from the institute's survey last month.

Angelides continues to suffer from lackluster support among Democrats despite his recent moves to spur enthusiasm among voters in his own party, according to the poll....

4. There's no mystery. Angelides is the invisible man.
Edited on Thu Oct-26-06 12:06 PM by Boo Boo
He has been for all intents defined by his opponent. He's going to raise taxes, blah, blah, blah... Angelides has had no response. He apparently can't afford to advertise. Perhaps he spent all his money defeating Westly? Too bad. I voted for Westly in the primary; he polled higher against Arnold, and he seemed more electable to me.

Hate to say it, but Angelides looks like the guy that gets beach sand kicked in his face, and Arnold looks like the guy that kicks the sand. That's not the kind of thing that matters to me, but I'm not the only one voting.

But while living here in Ca I do have to say that Phil could fuck a dog in the middle of the street and not one media outlet would cover it. AHHHHHHH-nuld has it all tied up. He is staging 'events' and his every fart is reported as perfume in every paper it seems.

He screwed up his campaign. I wish I had voted for Wesley now :grr: At least he would be fighting.

3. Having the Terminator as Governor is Cool!
When he was "elected" the first time I warned everyone that he would be Governor as long as allowed by law.

Of course, I said the same thing about Rovepuppet Bush.

5. After his primary win, Phil disappeared.
Lately, he's run a few commercials, but his has to be the sorriest excuse for a campaign I've ever seen. I voted for Westly only because I thought he'd be a better opponent against Arnold. At this point anyone would be a more formidable challenger.

9. north/south split?
Edited on Thu Oct-26-06 12:32 PM by Retrograde
It puzzled me, too, since Anglides struck me as just another old-school party-line apparachik while Wesley seemed more dynamic, but when I looked at the county returns after the primary I noticed that while Wesley did well in northern California - especially in the Bay Area - Angelides got a larger vote percentage-wise around the LA area, and that's where the voters are.

ETA: and that's the area that went more strongly for Scwatzenegger in the last election.

Governor Arnold SchwarzeneggerIn California's competitive gubernatorial race, Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger now leads Democratic challenger Phil Angelides 47% to 39% (see crosstabs). He has thus added a couple points to what had been a six-point lead in August.

Governor Schwarzenegger has struggled all year. But he stayed afloat, and managed to recover a narrow lead that he has now sustained three months in a row.

Edited on Thu Oct-26-06 04:47 PM by fooj
Hmmmmm? I live in California and let me tell you...these polls are rigged. No doubt. The hispanic population can't stand him. Last census put caucasians as the minority here. You do the math.

24. I live in CA as well.
"The hispanic population can't stand him. Last census put caucasians as the minority here. You do the math."

The hispanic population is the least likely to vote. They made up 6% of the vote last time.

"WTF has Arnold done to give him an extra 15 points"

Ummm. He went from an 8 pt to 17 pt lead (using the extremes of the polls) which is 9pts.

"these polls are rigged."

5 different polls all showing Ahnuld with a double digit lead are rigged? Please come back to the reality based community

Pew Research Extensive Study: MASSIVE demographic shift in public to Democrats

This is a big study, and it's very good news. It reminds me of all of the different categories where Democrats were bled dry by Republicans in 1994.

11. California Democrats blew it here
They should have cleared the primary field and settled on either Westley or Angeledis, and pushed the other candidate out of the election. Angeledis never recovered from the battering he took in the primary, and his campaign funds were used up on the primary.

20. Blowing money from the primary wasn't the problem
It was that the primary was bitter. At the same time, Arnold has also triangulated to the left, similar to what Bill Clinton did in 1995-1996 in order to win re-election. In this Gubernatorial election, Arnold is Clinton, and Angelides is Dole.
