Actor Fox sparks debate, support for stem cells

By Deborah Charles 32 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Stark campaign ads featuring actor Michael J. Fox's uncontrollable shaking caused by Parkinson's disease sparked debate this week, resulting in a rise in support for the stem cell research he supports.

A poll released late on Wednesday showed that U.S. voters' support for stem cell research jumped 5 percentage points after they viewed a television ad in which Fox -- whose body shook with spasms from Parkinson's -- states his support for candidates who favor the research.

The national poll by HCD Research and Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion surveyed 955 people on Tuesday and Wednesday with the support for stem cell research at 83 percent after viewing the ad from 78 percent previously.

It also said the level of concern regarding a candidate's view on the issue rose to 70 percent after the respondents viewed the ad, up from 57 percent.

1. "Limbaugh later issued a qualified apology and said......"

Opponents of the measure include the Roman Catholic Church and anti-abortion groups who say it immorally encourages human cloning as well as the unnecessary destruction of life.

After the ads began airing, nationally syndicated conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh said Fox was allowing his illness to be exploited and accused him of acting in the ad or not taking his medication in order to shake so much.

"All I'm saying is I've never seen him the way he appears in this commercial for Claire McCaskill," Limbaugh said on his syndicated radio show. "I will apologize to Michael J. Fox, if I am wrong in characterizing his behavior on this commercial as an act."

Limbaugh later issued a qualified apology and said Fox was raising false hopes by implying that a vote for McCaskill could lead to a cure for Parkinson's. The progressive, incurable disease affects 1 percent of Americans over the age of 65 and is marked by the destruction of brain cells that produce dopamine, which is key to movement.

The talk show host's comments sparked criticism from some listeners and lawmakers.

13. Raising false hopes? That is all cancer victims had years ago?
Where did LickBalls get his medical degree? What field is his practice?

I suppose obtaining prescription drugs illegally makes him a doctor.

17. Indeed, and another indication that....
The great right-wing spin machine has lost traction. A mere four years ago it would have been a slam dunk to destroy and discredit Fox.

4. I'm thrilled to see how much mileage Fox's ad is getting because of that scumbag.
Especially because of how thought-provoking & heartbreaking (for stable-minded people, that is) the ad is.

5. I think those last 17% have problems with the word "embryo"
Stem cells are taken from a human embryo in its very early developmental stages which looks like this:

There are literally millions of these things frozen in fertility clinics that are discarded as medical waste. I think many people (even among the 83%) think that stem calls are taken from an aborted foetus or something similarly horrible.

7. For all the facetious acting out of Fox's shaking that Limpballs did
would love to see how he shakes with a cattle prod up his ass.

He deserves it...nay, has EARNED it!

Rush is such an asswipe.

8. Michael J Fox's FIRST political TV commercial on stem cell
was for REPUBLICAN senator ARLEN SPECTER...

Let's all call his office and ask if Specter agrees with Rush that Fox is exaggerating and a fraud and shameless.

10. And tell Arlen's staff that Fox was not a Pennsylvanian constituent
The first thing you'll get asked is whether you're a Pennsylvanian/constituent of the Senator's. Tell them that since Michael J. Fox was not a constituent when Arlen accepted Fox's support, that question is irrelevant. Also tell them that stem cell research will benefit Americans in every state, not just Pennsylvania - but that if Specter has any decency, he will come to Fox's defense, and not in a mealy-mouthed, whiny way either. I've been listening to that man's nasal whine for years!

14. If he was going to imitate Fox's shaking realistically...
that would had done the trick.

Did you see how ridiculous he looked. Michael is or did do a rebuttal on tv tonite.

12. Limbaugh is just scared
that he might someday be able to grow a heart and a brain, two things that would exlude him from membership in his beloved GOP.

18. If he hadn't had it at all i could see the problem, medication doesn't work on everyone or
for long on those it does work on and it doesn't prolong the life of the patient..

so i guess instead of a cure Rush would rather just have a drug for diseases so people look Normal till they die if it.. good enough for that bag of rancid sh*t,

the poverty, illness and free thinking are Vices to Fascists,
