Americans expect big changes if Dems win Nov. 7
Updated 10/26/2006 9:37 AM ET

By Susan Page, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — Most Americans predict Democrats will win control of the House of Representatives in the elections Nov. 7, and they expect big things to follow — some good, some not — if Democrats take over both chambers, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll shows.

POLL RESULTS: What would be different?

If Democrats take over the House and Senate in January, more than 8 in 10 say, Congress would probably set a timetable to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq, a step favored by nearly two-thirds.

Less popular: Nearly two-thirds expect a Democratic Congress would raise federal income taxes. Three-fourths disapprove of that.

The survey of 1,002 adults Friday through Sunday underscores the high expectations and considerable trepidations around the prospect that Democrats could regain control of Congress for the first time since 1994. A 54% majority, including 1 in 4 Republicans, say a takeover of the House is likely.

ON DEADLINE: Do you expect big changes on Capitol Hill?............

1. I, for one, hope they enable Medicare to negotiate bulk pricing
for Medicare Part D reimbursements. It makes good fiscal sense, it's fair and it's an effective tool to maintain accessibility to medications for retirees and the disabled on Medicare.

2. When people think of raising taxes.........
They think we we are going to raise taxes on everybody, instead of just the rich. The majority of the public was against Bush-style tax cuts that benefitted the wealthy in 2001. However, when asked about tax increases as a general question, they answer with the Republican spin.

14. just rephrase the question in terms of the budget deficit
People predict that the budget deficit will be a lot less and I bet 3/4 of Americans would approve of that.

3. What a joke,......
---- Changes on the order of those postulated in this poll are not even in the ballpark. Even more discouraging,... no mention of the actual, most beneficial congressional development which WOULD be enabled by a democratic takeover of the House --- a chance to finally investigate and pierce the veil of secrecy and deceit of the Bush administration.

5. I want Mr. Conyers to follow through on his hearings
This time with subpoena power. Call Cheney to the dock, and hold him in contempt of Congress if he refuses this time.

I wanna see heads roll!!!

8. Yes!
Heads should roll, and not just a few! And there should be a HUGE list of grievances to accompany all of this, not the least of which should be the proof of Election theft!

6. When I learned to write I was told…
The first time you write a number you must use that same protical…ie..if you use $1,200.00 do not change to Three hundred dollars. The same with percentages, fractions et all. Yet this person uses 8 out of 10…(80%)

And two thirds (67%) and three forths (75%)

Then 54% (more than 1 out of 2) majority including 1 in 4 or (25%)..they think it makes it more interesting? NO..just more mundane!
My keyboard is screwed up..this I have to paste and copy from Word

13. Style rules of journalism vary from normal grammatical standards.
Numerals 1 thru 9 (or 10, can't remember anymore) are spelled out; numerals are used for all other numbers.

Similarly vexing rules for fractions, percentages, etc.

10. I do not see too many changes related to the heavy threats from the WH.
Most repugs and Dems are being threatenned and this is why Congress is voting what they are voting.

The Bush agenda will continue.

12. ... and I hope we won't disappoint them!
As far as taxes are concerned, we can start by reversing those unaffordable Bush tax cuts for the rich. We needn't -- and shouldn't -- raise the taxes of poor, working class, and middle class Americans; they're struggling, and their interests should come first.

15. Paul Krugman wrote a column today warning the Democrats
not to try to stick to the middle. He listed a whole series of far left ideas like using the buying power of Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices and pointed out that the AMerican people are in overwhelming favor of them. He also pointed out that there is no way to be bipartisan with the radical Republicans.

16. About the "democrats will raise your taxes" meme
Edited on Thu Oct-26-06 07:14 PM by SoCalDem
Let's say your family's monthly take-home pay is $3000.00...

and your wacky uncle gets your ATM card and siphons off $2000.00 for a big party ..

When you catch on and make him "pay you back", did you get a $2000.00 RAISE the month he paid you back?

or

were you just restored to your former status?

That's how these bogus taxcuts work.. The republicans handed out OUR SOCIAL SECURITY SURPLUS, and called it a tax cut..

The majority of people ended up with very little..

There's an ad running currently that uses a figure of $2k.. Let's examine that:

$2k divided by 52 = $38.46 per week. IF that's "after taxes", it only amounts to $153.84 per month.

Now look at your gasoline, food, electricity, health insurance premiums for a month

Did you "enjoy" that "extra money"?
