WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Thursday that critics should "just back off" on demands for deadlines in Iraq and that it is difficult to predict when Iraqis will resume control of their country. At a Pentagon news conference, Rumsfeld said benchmarks for security, political and economic progress that U.S. and Iraqi officials have been discussing are valuable because "you are in effect establishing priorities."

Maliki's statements this week distancing himself from any U.S. timelines have also appeared framed for his domestic audience, not U.S. backers.

He told Reuters on Thursday that he could stamp out violence in six months if the Americans would give him more weapons and control over his forces.

"He's a politician," Rumsfeld said of Maliki's statements, adding that such remarks should be expected. "We ought not to be surprised," he said. "Now we just sit back and enjoy the democracy that's there."

The White House blamed misleading media reports for saying Maliki rejected any sort of benchmarks or goals.

"The question he was asked was whether he agreed that there should be a timetable for withdrawal of troops in 18 months," spokeswoman Dana Perino said. "That is something that Maliki has rejected as foolhardy, and that the president fully agrees with."

Rumsfeld, in characteristically forceful yet jocular style, said reporters should "just back off ... and relax" when pressed about the benchmarks. He called "mischievous" the assertion that a general recently opened the door to troop increases...........

I forced myself to watch some of Rummy's press conference last night and thought that he was far from "jocular".

At one point, a particularly persistent reporter was asking follow-up questions to the subject of "benchmarks" and the capability of Iraqi units.

Rummy was spitting firebolts. Yelling and shouting, cutting people off, literally calling the reporter a liar.

Jocular? I hardly call that wizened mouth-rictus a smile.

The Secretary of Defense actually said in that exchange that we need to "relax". He should be fired immediately. I have a son who has had two tours in Iraq, and another is coming up in January.
We've had a bloody month with over 90 casualties. And this blithering idiot says to "relax"?
That's beyond stupid and insensitive.
It's positively criminal.
