Trooper who killed 2 gets traffic tickets

Trooper Robert Higbee received summonses for careless driving and failure to stop in the Sept. 27 accident in Upper Township that killed Jacquelin Becker, 17, who was driving, and her sister, Christina Becker, 19.

A preliminary investigation showed Higbee, 34, was on patrol in his marked 2005 Ford Crown Victoria "when he failed to stop at a stop sign" and collided with the Beckers' 2002 Dodge Caravan about 10 p.m.

"Trooper Higbee is saddened by the tragic loss of these two women and has wanted to extend his deepest condolences to the family," Subin said. "However, because of the legal proceedings, he has been advised not to do so."

The girls' mother, Maria Caiafa, has filed a notice of intent to sue the state over the crash. A telephone call to her attorney, Lewis April, was not immediately returned.

2. Good to hear she is going to sue. I know of another NJ state

trooper who didn't kill anyone with his car but did slap my niece while he was off duty. He almost sideswiped her car when cutting her off while she was driving. She gave him the finger so he forced her over and went up to her car window. When she wouldn't give him her license he slapped her. She was with her sister so she had a witness.

That was not the end of it. In a few weeks they started getting obscene threatening calls at all hours of the night. My younger niece was only 12 or so and was quite frightened getting these calls while no one was home. They changed their number but the calls still kept coming, even when the numbers were unlisted.

My brother works for a telephone company and it was he who found the culprit, phoning from telephone booths in the area. Turns out the guy was a state trooper, son of a chief of state trooper. This trooper was fired.

Goes to show you, just because you wear a badge doesn't make you a good guy.

3. My 16 year old cousin was killed

By a speeding highway parole officer, while she was crossing the street. She never saw him coming. He was going 80+ miles an hour, without having his emergency lights on.

This was many years ago, this story just reminded me.
