Steve Irwin Halloween outrage

STEVE Irwin outfits, complete with a bloody stingray barb attached to a khaki shirt, are among the top Halloween costumes in the US this year.

While some have found the Crocodile Hunter outfits amusing, others in the US are outraged at what they say is an insult to the late conservationist.

And one newspaper even makes a joke of Irwin's eight-year-old daughter Bindi's new television show and the loss of her father.

Photos of celebrity comedian Bill Maher at a Halloween party in Los Angeles at the weekend in the outfit are circulating on the internet.

I'm one that believed there was a touch of karma in the way Irwin met his fate, but I don't think it's cool to ridicule or make light of it. AFAIK, he was a protector of wild critters and deserves better than an obviously drunk Bill Maher taking a gratuitous poke at him.

12. Halloween costumes that offend your sensibilities are common. Let it go...

Halloween costumes are just that, costumes. Recent deaths and dismemberments are always a part of the regular event. They intentionally aim at sensitive targets.

Why would anyone waste any effort or emotion on a negative reaction to a costume?! If you don't like it, then look away. Go to Disneyland.

Many tasteless Halloween costumes frequent parties, often with great approval and sometimes with sneers. From Pedophile Priests to Clinton and Monica, costumes are designed to get under your skin.

So what? Will you castigate someone because you don't like their Halloween costume? Will you jump on a bandwagon of dissent, a mob mentality, just because you don't like a COSTUME?

Frankly, we have infinitely more important things to consider and work on this week.

27. Halloween 1997

I was partying on Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood. Halloween came just three weeks after John Denver was killed in a plane crash. A guy walked past me wearing a buckskin jacket and hat, singing "Rocky Mountain High" and playing the guitar, with an airplane propeller run through him. Even though I was devastating by John Denver's death, I ended up laughing in spite of myself.

I guess it's just human nature to laugh at death, especially on Halloween. It's how we deal with the horrible truth that sooner or later, we ain't gonna be here either.
