AP: Saints' Brees tells mother (Dem) to pull his image from political ads
LINK: http://msnbc.msn.com/id/15493489/

AUSTIN - New Orleans Saints' quarterback Drew Brees has asked his mother to stop using his picture in TV commercials touting her candidacy for a Texas appeals court.

In commercials running on Austin stations, Mina Brees had been using a picture of her son in the uniform of his former team, the San Diego Chargers, to emphasize her ties to football.

<snip>

Mina Brees, an Austin attorney, is running as a Democrat for a spot on Texas' 3rd Court of Appeals. She said replacement commercials that omit any mention of her son were taped last week and sent to stations on Friday.

She said she did not anticipate upsetting her son and that "everything in the ad was true."

Should make for a fun Thanksgiving....

3. What do you expect from a guy who shares a backfield with Bush?

Oh yeah, thanks for the three picks Sunday, dude. And the fumble, too. :sarcasm:

21. Just a quick note...
Let's not smear Reggie because he shares a common name with our POTUS.

Reggie, from all indications, is a stand up guy who has already put in more charity dollars and personal effort as a rookie, than most NFLers will put in in their lives.

He's done a lot for NOLA, and will be a good RB as well. ;)

5. Did she actually ASK her son before using his image?
Mother or not, she should have asked him before she used his image in any advertising campaign. He is a human and should be treated as such.

19. I'd be pissed if my mom used me to pimp her political career
...without asking me, regardless of her views. It's likely that if I agreed with her and she asked, I'd say it's fine, but I'm an adult and I deserve that consideration.

20. non sequitur
What is the relationship between:
1.) exploiting the career of your child for political gain, and
2.) having to ask permission from your child to admit you have kids?

Example 1:
My son is a football hero - vote for me.

Example 2:
I'm a mother - vote for me.

Frankly, I don't care what party affiliation someone has - if they
need to get votes by touting the fact that they are related to
celebrities, they shouldn't win.

28. Hmmmm...
Would not support for a career or other positive positive pursuit be a family value?

I would not require a family member to hold my political views as a requirement for my support.

But then..... I have seen some strange families in my day.
I guess to each his own.

7. Dickhead Wouldn't Help Out His Own Mom?!
Instead of being proud of her he's afraid he'll lose endorsement deals and fans over her political label? Oh that's right, he's in Dallas, Heartland of Bush Country.

*Yeah, yeah, he probably never outright said this but I can guess, can't I?*

30. I Correct Myself.
He was BORN in Bush Country, but now plays for the Saints.

I confused him with that other Drew (Bledsoe) who does play for Dullas.

Oh well. I don't follow football all that close.

Simply because the mother is a Democratic candidate, she must be heaven sent, while everyone and everything else must be a puke.

Read up a little on your angel, and you may just learn that every single Democrat is not perfection incarnate.

10. Attribution Error
General reasoning in this thread:

Person 'A' is a democrat.
Person 'B' does something "bad" to person 'A'.
Therefore person 'B' is an evil greedy Rethuglican.

The link from the OP says that the two had a falling out
after he refused to have his mom be his agent.

How about reading a news story before getting all fanciful?

16. He called his relationship with his mother "nonexistent" after it crumbled six years ago ...
... when he refused to hire her as his agent.

Mina Brees said her son's allegations were a mischaracterization and that she had no intention of becoming his agent.

....

from the story above ... sounds like more than politics was invloved

17. I believe this is a NFL rule, i.e. NO Politics for anyone in an NFL Uniform
Edited on Wed Nov-01-06 01:01 PM by happyslug
Thus it MIGHT NOT the fault of the son, but the NFL who put pressure on him to have the ads cut out.

A quit check on Yahoo turned up nothing but I still suspect the "problem" was that he was in an NFL uniform in the Picture and thus the NFL jumped at that to put pressure on him to have his picture removed from the ad.

why the old uniform as that would seem to historically evade the rule.

There is no such rule. You have no idea what you are talking about. There are numerou active NFL players that get involved in campaigns and make campaign contributions.

25. I did do some research and found NOTHING about any player IN UNIFORM
Edited on Wed Nov-01-06 07:20 PM by happyslug
I believe the rule is to appear in UNIFORM, for the UNIFORM is Copyrighted and can NOT be used by anyone WITHOUT NFL permission. Remember the ad was with her son in a NFL Uniform. The Key to the Ad was he was in a NFL uniform.

Now the NFL can NOT restrict what its members can do when it comes to politics, but it can restrict how they appear given the UNIFORM is a copyrighted item. Without the Uniform the player who appeared in the ad is almost worthless, i.e. the key was this Judaical Candidate's connection with a NFL Player who happens to be her son, not a connection with her son.

Remember how people's action are controlled is NOT done directly, for in most cases that is illegal, but indirectly through things like objecting and threatening to sue ANYONE who gave permission for a Copyrighted item to be used. Thus the Player was probably told to tell his Mother to STOP using that picture for the UNIFORM in the Picture is Copyrighted and can NOT be used for Political purposes.

Look at the ads for Candidates who had been ball players, they either use a Collage Jersey or a Generic Jersey (sometime with their old number on it) EXCEPT if the ad is for Charity etc. Thus my point is the UNIFORM was the "offending" item in the ad as far as the NFL was concern and the son was told to get his Mother to stop using the picture with him in an NFL Uniform.
