Fox News ratings take a steep tumble (-24% from 2005)
Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 02:47 PM by RamboLiberal
http://www.medialifemagazine.com/artman/publish/article_8294.asp

October was the 10th anniversary of Fox News, and in that 10 years it has risen to the No. 1 cable news network, riding on the tagline "Fair and Balanced."

Yet Fox News is showing serious signs of aging, led by steep audience declines.

Fox News’s total audience fell 24 percent in the past year, to 1.3 million viewers from 1.7 million, and its key primetime audience, viewers ages 25-54, was down 7 percent in October on a year-to-year basis, to an average 363,000 viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

In third quarter, Fox News suffered a 38 percent decline in 25-54s, to 409,000. In second quarter, that audience was down 22 percent and in first quarter it slid 28 percent. It is still No. 1 by a long shot.

Fox attributes the 2006 declines to a soft news year compared to 2005, which saw audiences shoot up during events like Hurricane Katrina, the Asian tsunami and the death of Pope John Paul II.

One of the Hurricanes Faux is facing is named Keith as in Keith Olbermann who's ratings are up 67%!

:kick: :bounce:  :nopity: :applause: :woohoo:

Who is not paying attention to KO's rise in these times needs to be drummed out of the corps.

I feel certain Murdoch is noticing. Watch and see who gets shows after the elections.

23. Murdoch will ride the winning train, no matter what. That corporate pig can turn on a dime.
He has no problem with local Faux news affiliates being uber-liberal, and showing all sorts of edgy, leftie situation comedy and reality show programming, while his flagship cable news outlet is to the right of Attilla the Hun. He can have his flacks on his cable news rail about the smut on TV while he peddles it on his entertainment channels.

If the "new cool" became All Democrats, All The Time, the Hannitys and other fatheaded smarmy pricks would be out on the breadline, and in would come some telegenic new blood that appeals to the lefties amongst us!

Murdoch ain't gonna be caught napping. Like I said, that fat bastard can turn on a dime like a ballerina in top form.

5. So the free market kicked in and kicked their ass
Basically the competition moved more into direct competition. What you see happening now, is different shows with strong opinions from both sides beginning to develop. Olberman will start this movement for the left.

10. A total audience of 1.3 mil, out of a nation of 300 million?
I heard that 5 wingers at the radio misinformation encampment outside the WH have a combined audience of 30 million. I think talk radio has more propaganda power than Faux, who we give too much credit to for influence. (Well, other than being Voice of the WH.) They've convinced us that they're more representative of other regular folks than they really are.

28. A couple of notes on ratings
1.3 million national viewers to Fox news is pretty lame overall. Do you realize that the all news radio station in New York, 1010 WINS, reaches over 2 million people every week. Add WCBS-AM in New York (the other all news station) and they have another 1.7 million peopke tuning in.

1. That is just in one market and

2. They are both radio stations.

Sorry, but I am not much impressed with a petty number of 1.3 million. Influence? Not much.

20. HN & MSNBC were actually up in that demo last month, by18 percent & 19 percent!!
CNN has also been down steeply this year in total viewers and 25-54s but not as much as Fox, and in October its 25-54 primetime audience was essentially flat at down 1 percent.

And both Headline News and MSNBC were actually up in that demo last month, by 18 percent and 19 percent

41. Attributed decline to a "soft news year" What planet are they on? K&R
Fox cable is the feeder to all those fox stations. They're the ones that "mold" the minds of so many.

If it were just cable, we'd have nothing to care about: "1.3 million viewers from 1.7 million, "

This IS great news.
