Democrats unleash TV attack, radio ads

By DAVID ESPO
AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Aggressive to the end, Democrats opened two new fronts Friday in the battle for control of Congress, unleashing a costly televised attack against a Colorado Republican and airing radio ads on Christian stations favored by Republican listeners.

Republicans looked to President Bush and their proven get-out-the-vote operation to minimize their losses in next Tuesday's elections, held at a time of widespread unease with the status quo.

"It was meant to be a little on the stealth side," Democratic chairman Howard Dean said of the radio ads, part of an attempt to appeal to conservative voters who have long backed Republicans.

-snip-
But more than the charge-countercharge, the last-minute advertising underscored the extent to which the Democrats have been on offense and the Republicans on defense in the run-up to Tuesday's elections. As many as 60 seats in the House and a half-dozen or more in the Senate remained competitive - almost all under GOP control - as Democrats sought to ride a wave of discontent with the war on Iraq to victory in the polls.

4. Brilliant!
The ads on Christian stations was a stroke of genius. After all, it's hard to understand how an honest conservative Christian could vote for the Republicans, given their plague of scandals. No matter how bad they think the Democrats are, at least the Democrats aren't lying, thieving, coverup perverts.

5. I hope it works
People I've been talking to are absolutely sick of them and ready to vote for anybody who will just tell them what they want to accomplish. OTOH, they're also very angry and if the ad is done right, could just tip them over the edge. Very risky, hope it works.

23. They have to legally
They don't have to run 527 ads, but they do have to give time to any candidate muying airtime. They also have to charge the lowest avergae unit rate for all candidates. That way they can't charge $10 for one persons commercial and $100 for another.

11. And notice how the Democratic 'attack' ads are all truth, all the time.
Meanwhile, Repuke attack ads are full of lies, slime, and innuendo.

Anybody else outside of this board ever point that out?

Democrats rising

4:00 p.m.

Democrats running for statewide office are poised for a big day at the polls next week, according to a new Mason-Dixon poll for The Plain Dealer...

The big surprise is in the race for attorney general, which the poll suggests is dead even. Democrat Marc Dann and Republican Betty Montgomery each claimed the support of 44 percent of respondents.

In the race for Secretary of State, Democrat Jennifer Brunner leads Republican Greg Hartmann, 41 to 32.

For state treasurer, Democrat Richard Corddray leads Republican Sandra O'Brien, 47-35...

17. the dems are sending out fabulous mailings in palm beach county
Edited on Sat Nov-04-06 07:33 AM by bedazzled
my husband is a registered republican (don't ask) and we have gotten four
full color, high quality paper, page-sized mailing cards so far. each
getting steadily worse!

"Republicans have failed florida - insurance pain/schools a failing grade -
republicans have ignored the needs of our families" with a huge picture of
crist and bush on the front

"Scandal. Corruption. No accountability. Picture of foley and crist
behind bush. Republicans are out of control. Their arrogance and lack of
leadership has put America on the wrong path. Endless War. Skyrocketing
insurance. Corruption. FCAT hurting education."

"Cost of War: Nearly 3,000 killed - 21,000 wounded. $400 billion a year.
Are you ready for a new direction. Pictures of empty boots and helmets
and a sad little girl. Send bush a message on iraq. bush lied about
weapons of mass destruction to start war. led us into endless disaster with
no plans for victory. only our votes will lead us out."

and the best one came yesterday. endless lines of flag draped coffins.
bush looking stupid(er than usual) in front of "mission accomplished"
bannder. Bush failed our troops. failed american families. failed his
duty. it's time for a new direction." similar info to last card on back.

one question i have about the mailing is that they use the terminology
"vote democrat" each time. i know that some here are critical of that. i
don't care if the idiot thugs use it -- i think it sounds kind of cool...

the television ads are well-nigh unwatchable on both sides. the folks i've
questioned about it seem to agree with me that the ads are so negative and ugly,
they kind of block them out.

the other question i have is why the dems spend lots of money to advertise
on air america. talk about preaching to the choir.

the doctor and the dems are doing a great job in palm beach county!

27. In the phrase "Vote Democrat" the word "Democrat" is an adverb...
...and so if you wanted to follow the typical format of adverbs, you'd have to say "Vote Democratically" which is a lot of syllables. "Vote Democrat" looks better. "Vote for Democrats" avoids the issue.

I'm comfortable with "Democrat" being used as an adverb, just not as an adjective (No "Democrat Party.")

Democrats Unleash TV Attack, Radio Ads

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Aggressive to the end, Democrats opened two new fronts Friday in the battle for control of Congress, unleashing a costly televised attack against a Colorado Republican and airing radio ads on Christian stations favored by Republican listeners.

- snip -

''It was meant to be a little on the stealth side,'' Democratic chairman Howard Dean said of the radio ads, part of an attempt to appeal to conservative voters who have long backed Republicans.

The television commercial, by the party's House campaign committee, was aimed at Republican Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, a second-term Colorado lawmaker in an unexpectedly tight race for re-election. ''She works overtime for special interests,'' says the ad, which drew a swift rebuttal from her campaign.

''The special interests she works overtime for are her constituents -- farmers, ranchers, small business owners,'' shot back spokesman Guy Short.

But more than the charge-countercharge, the last-minute advertising underscored the extent to which the Democrats have been on offense and the Republicans on defense in the run-up to Tuesday's elections. As many as 60 seats in the House and a half-dozen or more in the Senate remained competitive -- almost all under GOP control -- as Democrats sought to ride a wave of discontent with the war on Iraq to victory in the polls.

- snip -

A recent AP-AOL News poll suggested that about 38 percent of likely voters either have yet to make up their minds or could change their minds before casting their ballots. Of them, 51 percent favored the Democrats, 35 percent were partial to the Republicans and 14 percent were either undecided or they refused to say how they will vote.

26. Appealing to Fundies...
Now there's an interestong gambit. I question its efficacy, but I can't deny the stroke of genius that was the initial impetus.

Let's hope that a good portion of the so-called "Christians" will wake up and realize that the teachings of Christ are conspicuously bereft of advocacy for torture, war, and atrocity.
