Now, if we could just get Daschle to resign also. Sorry, but he is not the Dem of my dreams after that debacle on Medicare. :puke:

38. We do not want Daschle to resign
Then Gov. Rounds will appoint an archconservative. Daschle may not be the most liberal member of the Senate, but we don't him to be appointed by another Republican.

7. Have they mentioned yet that Janklow is a Republican ?
Not that there would be any reason for the presstitutes to do that, mind you. Especially since he is not doing anything Republicans don't usually do like drink and drive.

3. He'll appeal. He didn't want to face an ethics investigation.
That would bring everything they suppressed at trial open for discussion. :D

6. sorry, but....
....I got a breaking news e-mail from Faux News. I won't link to their site. I refuse to increase their page views. (I only get their breaking news e-mails because they are, on average, 10-15 minutes faster than CNN's, and I don't own a TV).

When CNN posts the story, I'll post a link. :-)

Janklow to Resign Following Conviction

FLANDREAU, S.D. (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Bill Janklow, convicted Monday of manslaughter for an Aug. 16 traffic death, announced late Monday he will resign from the House, effective Jan. 20.

A jury convicted Rep. Bill Janklow of manslaughter earlier Monday for a collision that killed a motorcyclist, rejecting the congressman's claim that he was disoriented by a diabetic reaction.

The jury in Janklow's boyhood hometown deliberated for about five hours before returning the verdict.

Janklow appeared stunned as the verdict was read. He walked steadily out of the courtroom, got in a vehicle driven by his son and left the courthouse. He refused to respond to questions shouted by a horde of reporters.

17. Almost nobody has mentioned that he is a Repug...
...I've been looking for it too. Someone called one of the right wing radio shows here and said that he never heard Janklow's party affilliation, so he must be a Democrat because of the left wing media. I laughed my ass off. But then I started watching all the news shows, and I have only seen it mentioned once since the trial was announced. Left wing media, huh? What a joke!

"I wish to inform you that because of present circumstances, I will be unable to perform the duties incumbent on me in representing the people of South Dakota as their U.S. representative," the Republican wrote in a letter that he said was to be sent to House Speaker Dennis Hastert on Tuesday.

"Janklow appeared stunned"

that a jury would convict him, in a state he thought he owned, b/c he had gotten away with behavior that could have killed people for a damn long time.

i wonder if the cops that didnt write those tickets for him before will come out now.

it could be quite damning and go towards his sentence if he tried bribery or threat or political power to get them to reconsider.

this will give democrats a opportunity at another special election and I think we have a very good chance to pick up the SD seat especially if the '02 democratic candidate who ran against Janklow runs (she did surprisingly well) I can't remember her name.

16. Even though his defense was ridiculous...
he still had a right to be tried.

If Janklow goes to prison, it will be interesting what the other prisoners, especially the biker inmates, will think of him. Some might take offense to Janklow's mowing down a biker like that.

Other issues from the Governor's past may also need to be addressed. For example, some of Janklow's fellow convicts may have wrote him letters when he was Governor of the state, begging for pardons which he turned down.

When meeting some of his new neighbors in the slammer, Janklow may have actually put some of them there in his tenure as S.D.'s AG

If he gets a pat-on-the wrist sentence. As per R Hickey's post, the judge may decide that it would be too "dangerous" for someone as highly ranked as Janklow to be among the general prision population. Or maybe he'll be sent to a minimum security country club-type place.

24. As someone who was born in South Dakota...
...and had to experience his "leadership" for a long time in that state, witnessed his reckless abandon for those traffic laws, and his massive ego, I must say that this is quite a surprising end to his career.
I thought for sure he would get off.

26. I too am from So. Dak
Aberdeen CHS 80'

I know all to well how some people behave out there. My brother runs stop signs and I have seen the lights off approaching the intersection method. I never did it. It goes to show you that a lifetime of disobeying the traffic laws will eventually catch up to you either from you killing someone or being killed.

Nobody seems to mention that much in the news.

There are crooks in both parties. I didn't like it when they mentioned Gary Condit's party and I wouldn't like it in this case either. It's not relevant to our partisan discourse.

30. Tragedy everywhere...
...For the Scott family, the Janklows and the entire state of South Dakota.

I woke up this morning hearing that this state will not have a voice in the House from January until June. The Governor, at this point, has stated that they will have a special election for the seat at the JUNE 1 PRIMARY. JUNE 1!!!!!!!

So we have to go without a voice four over four months. As for Herseth, don't forget about Thune, who might look at this to get back where he always wanted - the House. He did not want to run against Johnson, he wanted the Governorship or to go back to the House. Here's his chance to get back there. It's either this or run against Daschle...

31. I try not to celebrate...
...others' misery but this verdict was clearly justice. I'm so glad the jury did not fall for that absurd "diabetic reaction" defense - but I guess the defense team had to come up with something.

It gives me hope when things go as they should - when it sometimes seems nothing in Washington does. :)
