Toyota's quarterly profit rises 34 pct.
TOKYO - Toyota said Tuesday its net profit surged 34 percent in the July-September quarter, boosted by strong sales in the North American and European markets at a time its U.S. rivals are struggling.

The Japanese automaker, on pace to overtake General Motors Corp. as the world's biggest automaker in coming years, also raised its profit forecast for the full fiscal year through March to 1.55 trillion yen ($13.14 billion), up from an earlier 1.31 trillion yen.

For the fiscal second quarter, Toyota Motor Corp. posted 405.7 billion yen ($3.44 billion) in group net profit, up 33.5 percent from the 303.7 billion yen reported for the same period last year.

Overall sales in the fiscal second quarter rose 17.3 percent to 5.83 trillion yen ($49.4 billion). Sales were up in North America, due to the strong sales of redesigned models such as the RAV4 and Yaris, and the new model FJ Cruiser.

1. And the American auto makers are seeing their profits take a dive.
But for some reason they're in the 'stay the course' mentality. Wonder where that came from?

2. Just read an article in Truck Trend
Magazine about how Ford plans on concentrating on even bigger trucks they call Mega Pickups than the biggest seller the F-150 size pickup to save the company. These people just don't get it, gas goes up they build even bigger vehicles. Their philosophy is if we build it they will come I guess. Rather than compete with Toyota and Nissan they think they can just make super size trucks and survive. I feel sorry for the UAW workers caught up in this mess.

6. It's a shame though.....
That there are probably around 50 or so different models sold here in Europe that's just not available in the US now, many smaller and more fuel economic. The smallest Toyotas (Corolla and Yaris) here are probably mid-size compared to models offered by others. But Nissan's got the Micra and the Note, both with smaller engines, yet the Note is a larger car overall. Yep, you can even get a small Mercedes (if you've got that kind of cash).

Disclosure: My wife and I own a Nissan Note, probably one of the first five here in Kiev. It's 1.4L, manual trans, heated seats and mirrors, and a chilled glovebox to keep your picnic goodies cold. And room for five adults. Overall a better car than the Sentra in the states, and a hell of a lot more economical.

Maybe you want to contact Nissan and ask why the hell aren't they available in the USA??

11. Formulas for success in the auto industry!
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 09:08 PM by freethought
The Japanese/Asian approach
-innovation
-efficiency production
-take risks
-build reliable autos
-quality and reliability

The American approach
-divert millions from R&D to lobbyists in Washington and a number of state houses. Lobby your way to profitability!
-Hey! This is still the 60s and early 70s, build em as big as a battleship!
-Innovation? Uh, sure! Yeah, that's the ticket.
-Reliability? Mmmmm, maybe.
-Fuel efficiency? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !
-Gruesomely overpay the highest management

My father used to work for GM many years ago at their plant at Framingham, MA which has long since closed. His entire life he never owned a foreign car and looked with dismay if any of his kids purchased a foreign car. He stuck with the Big Three in thick and thin.
I find it hard to sympathize with the US auto makers. Alot of people are going to loose jobs and livelihoods. Pension obligations and health care costs are PART of the problem but they are NOT ALL of the problem. My personal take is that at least one of the US Big Three will be a memory in 3 years.

14. American Motor companies do not compete well against foreign economy cars
In the economy class, American cars just do not hold up well.

I just bought a Scion, which of course is made by Toyota. I take GREAT comfort in seeing the label "Toyota Motor Corp." on a lot of the parts of this car.

15. Amurkin companies don't like competition.
They like monopolies protected by political clout.
