Hershey recalls products over salmonella fears

CTV.ca News Staff

Fears of salmonella contamination drove chocolate-maker Hershey to recall a number of chocolate bars and candies made at its Smiths Falls, Ont. plant.

However, a company spokesperson said the risk to consumers is low.

"What's important to note is that most of the product in question is either already in our control or is currently being retrieved from our customers," Stephanie Moritz told CTV News on Sunday.

A notice released by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency warned the public not to consume certain chocolate products from the company due to salmonella fears.

1. I'm wondering if any of this went outside Canada
I'm not seeing any indication so I'm wondering for the benefit of the overwhelming number of Americans seeing this (LBN complaint) headline which doesn't specify Canada specifically.

5. Of course, which is why my question was re: these specific products
from this specific plant.

Though since the FDA isn't doing anything, that'd tend to indicate this was the Canadian branch, serving Canada only...

8. I am from Hershey,
born and raised in the area. My grandparents knew Milton Hershey. Take my word, Mr. Hershey is turning in his grave on the handling of what has become Hershey and his beloved chocolate factory. Personally I stopped eating Hershey chocolate a long, long time ago. First of all the original recipe has been changed to cut cost. Now, who would have thunk that!!!!!!!!! A corportation trying to cut cost. It is no longer the chocolate that it once was. Now it is full of stuff I can't even pronounce let alone spell.

The factory was built to give the people of the community and surrounding areas work and the park for the people of the area and employees to enjoy on their days off. Now they are outsourcing jobs and the park has been a monster that is gobbling up every inch of available land, making a once quiet country type town into a corporate hungry town, trying to make money from every inch.

This is definetly not what Milton had in mind.

Edited on Mon Nov-13-06 08:38 AM by 48percenter
My Dad laughed because I told the waitress at the Hershey Hotel that I smelled pleasant pollution. Too bad that's gone, and the corporatists took over. That memory will stay with me forever, the faint aroma of chocolate wafting through the town.

HERSHEY’S Visitors Center
in Smiths Falls, Ontario

Please be advised that The Chocolate Shoppe is closed until further notice.

Please click here to view the press release and a list of the products included in the Hershey Canada recall.

The rest of Smiths Falls basically just looks like the kinda crappy small town it is.

On a trip through the US about 3 years ago I discovered that Hershey's chocolate bars had indeed been changed -- they are now like the milk chocolate we eat up here in Canada (US chocolate bars, or what are called "candy bars" there, tend to be darker). They're actually absolutely yummy (especially the ones with almonds, which are very good for ya), to those of us who can't stand dark chocolate!

36. More bitter than sweet for Hershey recall
Further tests confirmed the presence of salmonella, said Hershey company spokeswoman Stephanie Moritz. Ms. Moritz would not say what externally-sourced ingredient was responsible for the suspected contamination.

The high-fat content of chocolate makes it particularly adept at transferring salmonella. The low moisture and high sugar content increases the heat-resistance of the bacteria, while the fat content protects the salmonella against stomach acid during digestion.

Public health professor Norman Noah, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said about 10,000 salmonellas are needed to cause an infection in a normal human being, but “when it's tied up in a fatty food like chocolate the dose tends to be somewhat smaller.”

44. all over the Cdn news

The co-vivant got himself a dark chocolate bar at the 7-11 for dessert on Sunday night (diabetic; dark chocolate is much lower in carbs than milk chocolate) ... and *then* looked at it and thought hm, Hershey's, wonder whether I should eat it ... not wanting to count on the undertrained undermotivated 7-11 staff to have removed poisonous things from the shelves.

He looked up the batch numbers on the net (6417 to 6455) and found he was safe.

Employees are apparently hoping to be able to claim employment insurance, but I think they would ordinarily have to do the two-week waiting period before benefits started, and one would expect the plant to reopen by then.

The source of the salmonella appears to have pretty definitely been an ingredient purchased elsewhere, not some long-festering problem at the plant itself, but obviously any contamination at the plant will have to be identified and dealt with.

45. UPDATED - HEALTH HAZARD ALERT
CHOCOLATE COATED ALMONDS PURCHASED AT HERSHEY’S SMITHS FALLS CHOCOLATE SHOPPE MAY CONTAIN SALMONELLA BACTERIA
Related Sites: 2006-11-14 | 2006-11-12

OTTAWA, November 14, 2006 - The public warning issued on November 12, 2006 has been updated to include additional information.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Hershey Canada Inc. are warning the public not to consume chocolate-coated almonds purchased in bulk only at Hershey’s Smiths Falls, Ontario Chocolate Shoppe. These chocolate-coated almonds may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The affected product was sold in bulk by weight between October 23 and November 10, 2006. This product was not included in Halloween, Christmas or any type of gift pack items sold from the Chocolate Shoppe.

Consumers who may have purchased chocolate-coated almonds at Hershey’s Smiths Falls, Ontario Chocolate Shoppe and are unsure of the date of purchase should not consume the product.

Hershey Canada Inc., Mississauga, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling this product from the market place.

Modern Management Initiatives

The CFIA has embraced the principles of modern comptrollership since its inception in 1997. It was one of the first agencies in the federal public service to commit to presenting its financial statements according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This commitment was enshrined in the Agency’s founding legislation, The Canadian Food Inspection Agency Act. Accordingly, the Agency’s annual audited financial statements have been produced on an accrual accounting basis since 2001.

The CFIA also adopted the principle that delegation, both financial and human resource-based, should be made as close to front-line management (where the business decisions had immediate impact) as practical. The Agency recognized that a strong management/leadership cadre, supported by intensive training, good integrated management tools and systems (including risk management) and a commitment to responsible active monitoring would be integral to its success. Through extensive employee consultation, the Agency also developed a strong values and ethics framework, designed to encourage an orderly transition from a rules-based to a values-driven organization.

The CFIA remains strongly committed to using modern comptrollership as the vehicle to continue to evolve into a more flexible, responsive, transparent, productive, and results-oriented organization.

http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/audit/mod/mode.shtml

Appears that it has something to do with the almonds.

Seems to be bla.. bla... But it looks like the censors haven't gotten around to the CFIA.

48. Latest Info
Soy the culprit in Hershey recall

The culprit ingredient in last weekend's Hershey chocolate recall was a thickening agent used to make chocolate flow more easily during production.

Soy lecithin has been identified as the source of salmonella detected in a range of the company's popular chocolates, said Hershey spokeswoman Stephanie Moritz on Thursday.

Ms. Moritz said she did not know if the soy lecithin came from Canada, but said it had only been shipped to the Smiths Falls, Ont., plant, which remains closed due to the contamination.
