Lott looking to make a return (Republican Whip)

Lott looking to make a return

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Some four years after being forced to resign as majority leader, Sen. Trent Lott is trying to make a comeback.

The Mississippi Republican is running for minority whip, the number two spot in the GOP leadership -- a post he once held.

"Senator Lott is running for Republican Whip," Susan Irby, Lott's spokeswoman said. "His name will be on the ballot. We are closing in on victory."

Lott is running against Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tennessee. A GOP senator, who received a call from Lott last week, told CNN the Mississippi Republican has been quietly rounding up votes for some time.

1. Alexander or Lott for Republican Whip. That's a good sign.
Both dislike Bush, and Bush dislikes them. Interesting direction the party is heading in.

Lott would be my pick. He's from the Katrina area, so he's got a healthy distrust of BusCo, an insite into the failure of Bush's policies, a desire to change those policies based on first-hand experience, and therefore, a need to work with Democrats. In other words, he wants something, so he's more likely to give up something to get it.

I wonder if Alexander wants this to launch another presidential bid.

3. I prefer Lott because he's such a racist baboon
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 10:26 AM by exlrrp
Yep, hate to say it but Lott will be great as a punching bag. He's got plenty of baggage dragging around, also is used to working with a Democrat majority.
Even being the Rac-boon stated, his predecessor Frist makes him look like a super star.

What has always amazed me is thhat Lott got such a ration of shit for saying nice thinfgs about America's Longest Serving Racist, while nothng was ever said about the Longest Serving Racist, Thurmond, himself. He just sat there in his wheelchair droooling while all the focus was on Lott. I knew then that the media was bought offf by Bush because Bush's tiies to Thurmond was never mentioned. I was desperately loooking for a picture of them together to post during the 2000 election and couldn't find one. The senior Senator of Bush's Party and Bush never said a word about it at all.
The media ignored Thurmonds racist history while he was sitting senator---almost as if they were pretending the civil rights movement ended in one bipartisan national Kumbaya moment, which is the image the Repubs want the world to have of it. Not how I remember it and I lived through it.
Comparison to Byrd are specious--Byrd didn't have a half black daughter and then casmpaaign for President on a platform of segregation and miscenegation laws. Thurmond got almost a complet bye on this in the media his last 30 years.

12. Yeah, there's that, too.
Though I don't think Lott's as racist as the Thurmond incident makes him seem. He was pandering to a pro-Thurmond audience. We all know, also, that he was set up--Repubs say these kinds of things all the time, and they rarely got fussed about. Lott was set up for the fall, either by BushCo or FristCo. The coast where Lott grew up (and where I grew up) was the least racist part of the state, and has an image as somewhat "liberal" in the rest of the state (thoughonly in comparison to the rest of the state). So Lott has to overstate his non-liberalness to get the support of the rest of the state.

Not saying Lott's an enlightened, open-minded renaissance man, you understand. Just saying he's probably not much worse than Alexander, and Alexander is probably not nearly as nice as he seems, either. He is still a Republican, in the South. There's only so far you can go towards becoming a decent person before you abandon that party. Alexander hasn't gone that far.

I don't like either. Lott gives us some advantages. Alexander doesn't help us at all, and might even hurt in the long run, by putting a pretty face on an ugly ideology.

34. Lott May Have Gotten Burned
I'm not sure what he meant by saying we wouldn't have all these problems if Strom Thurmond had been elected President, but I don't think he really meant that segregation was a good idea. Nobody is that stupid. I don't think Lott is that much of a racist.

Perhaps Lott was speaking of the Supreme Court justices appointed by Truman and Eisenhower - the
Warren Court, the Berger Court. It is not just about desegregation, but doing away with prayer in school and reproductive rights, too. We have no other indication Lott would support segregation, but we know darn well what he thinks of Roe vs. Wade. Also, the one time Democrats, then Dixiecrats now Southern Republicans are big advocates of "states' rights." They hate federal government intervention, and don't seem to realize that the South never would have ended slavery or desegregation without it.

Not to defend Lott, there's plenty else to disklike about him. We should however, be realistic. Some of our guys eat foot sometimes too and have their quotes twisted and taken out of context.

He's still the same old 'piece of shit confederate' just dressed up and made up all nice. The problem is that he's still just a piece of shit. I haven't forgotten how much I've always loathed the fucker in spite of being distracted by the ass-raping to our country by the evil Frist. I'm glad Katrina visited him, it's too bad he wasn't swept away by the storm.

16. He might as well
The GOP is increasingly redefining itself as the party of the Old Dixiecrat South, and of unchanged attitudes stemming from long-standing white southern bigotry and intolerance. Trent Lott fits that mold perfectly, and his re-elevation to a leadership position should dispel any notions that Republicans are a "party of inclusiveness".

19. Dems had power even when they were down.
Even when we were out of power, we were able to defeat some of the worst of the bunch: Trent Lott, Harriet Miers, Tom Delay, Jack Abramoff...And then in the wake of the election, a taste of what's to come...Santorum, Allen, Rumsfeld, etc. Now we should target the big guns.

Bush calls Lott comments 'offensive'
GOP leader faces pressure for further explanation
Friday, December 13, 2002 Posted: 12:15 AM EST (0515 GMT)

President Bush delivered a rare -- and stinging -- rebuke of a fellow Republican when he criticized Trent Lott's recent comments.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush on Thursday sharply rebuked incoming Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott for comments that some have called racist, saying any suggestion that segregation was acceptable is "offensive and it is wrong."

Bush's comments, delivered to a mixed-race audience in Philadelphia, came one day after Lott, a Mississippi Republican, said he would not give up his leadership post, despite the furor over his remarks.

"Recent comments by Sen. Lott do not reflect the spirit of our country," Bush said to loud applause. "He has apologized and rightly so. Every day that our nation was segregated was a day our nation was unfaithful to our founding ideals."

A spokesman for Lott said the senator agreed with the president that his comments were wrong and reiterated his regret at having said them. Lott later called the president and the two had what aides described as a positive conversation.

The president did not call for Lott to step down, but other conservatives say Lott must offer a fuller explanation of his comments, despite his apology.

"On their face, the recent comments of Sen. Trent Lott are offensive, repugnant and inimical to what the Republican Party stands for," said William Bennett, a noted conservative author and education secretary during the Reagan administration.

Bennett suggested that Lott's........

30. I think we want Alexander -
Lott knows the Senate procedures inside out and would be a fair match for Reid, who is a master of parliamentary procedure. Bill Frist knew nothing about it, and Reid ran circles around him. I think the best chance of getting the Democratic agenda through is with a know-nothing heading the Republican caucus: that would be Aleander, ably backing up O'Connell, who only knows partisan hackery.

Remember Lott got a *lot* done with Clinton. And he knows the Senate back to front.

35. Beh...
The "nuclear" option was Lott's, as well as a host of others.

Lott has been Chairman of the Rules committee since being thrown out of the Majority Leader's post. He's had a huge amount of influence on bills.

As long as we give him his pork -- including judicial nominations for the state of MS and the 5th circuit, he couldn't care less.
