Democrat (Joe Courtney) wins U.S. House seat in Conn.
HARTFORD, Conn. - Democrat Joe Courtney's victory over Republican Rep. Rob Simmons in their U.S. House contest was confirmed Tuesday by results of a roller-coaster recount that stretched nearly a week and uncovered significant vote-counting flaws.

Recounts showed that Courtney won by 91 votes instead of the 167-vote margin counted on election night, according to results tabulated by town clerks and reported to The Associated Press. Nearly 250,000 votes were cast.

"He (Simmons) ran a great campaign," state Republican Party chairman George Gallo said. "He served with distinction in the 2nd District, and he can hold his head up very high."

Both parties monitored the recount and confirmed that Courtney had the final edge, although their figures differed. Republicans said their count showed Courtney winning by 96 votes, while Democrats had the margin at 93.

With the Courtney victory over a Republican incumbent, Democrats have 230 seats; Republicans, 195.

The Green Papers

U.S. House 110th Congress. 229 Democrats (majority) to 196 Republicans. 10 races to call.

Connecticut CD 2: Courtney (D) 50.03% vs. Congressman Simmons (R) 49.97%. Uncertified but official tallies indicate Courtney has unseated Congressman Simmons by 167 votes out of 242,459.

Florida CD 13: Buchanan (R) 50.08% vs. Jennings (D) 49.92%. Christine L. Jennings has requested a recount. There is a 13% undervote (blank ballots cast) in this contest while other contests have a 2% undervote. We are currently calling this contest for Buchanan.

Georgia CD 12: Congressman Barrow (D) 50.31% vs. Burns (R) 49.69%. Congressman Barrow has declared victory by 889 votes.

New Mexico CD 1: Congressman Wilson (R) 50.36% vs. Madrid (D) 49.64%. Currently awaiting the results of provisional ballots.

North Carolina CD 8: Congressman Hayes (R) 50.19% vs. Kissell (D) 49.81%. Currently awaiting the results of provisional ballots.

Ohio CD 2: Congressman Schmidt (R) 50.63% vs. Wulsin (D) 49.37%. Congressman Schmidt continues to hold the lead.

Ohio CD 15: Congressman Pryce (R) 50.89% vs. Kilroy (D) 49.11%. Congressman Pryce holds the lead as the absentee ballots and
provisional ballots continue to be counted.

Washington CD 8: Congressman Reichert (R) 50.91% vs. Burner (D) 49.09%. Congressman Reichert continues to hold his lead. The Associated Press called the race for Congressman Reichert on Monday 13 November.

Wyoming At-Large: Congressman Cubin (R) 48.3% vs. Trauner (D) 47.9%. Congressman Cubin has held the lead during the canvassing and will likely be declared the winner sometime during the week of 12 November.

* * *

U.S. House 110th Congress - 2 contests headed to runoffs.

Louisiana CD 2: Since no candidate received a majority of the 7 November vote, the top two vote getters, Congressman Jefferson (D) 30.0% and Carter (D) 21.6%, will face off in a 9 December runoff

Texas CD 23: Since no candidate received a majority of the 7 November vote in the non-Partisan "all-up" election, the top two vote getters, Congressman Bonilla (R) 48.1% and Rodriguez (D) 20.3% will compete in a December runoff.

109th U.S. House Special Elections. The composition of the 109th House is now 230 Republicans, 202 Democrats, 2 vacant offices, 1 Independent.

New Jersey CD 13: Democratic Albio Sires was elected to fill the vacant seat from November 2006 to January 2007. He also won the January 2007 to January 2009 term.

Texas CD 22: Republican Shelley Sekula-Gibbs was elected to fill the vacant seat from November 2006 to January 2007 however she lost the January 2007 to January 2009 term to Nick Lampson.

6. And that's not the closest that district has ever been. In 1994, the margin was
21 (yes, 21!) votes.

We are still awaiting the count (the initial count) in our 1st Congressional District race.

Our Attorney General, Patricia Madrid, is trailing the Bush-clone, incumbent, Heather Wilson by less than 1500 votes. It is unimaginable that we have been unable to capture this seat, especially in a watershed election like this. This district has many more registered Democrats than repubs and the race is always tight and Madrid should have been able to defeat Wilson quite handily. I can't imagine that my friends and neighbors remain stupid enough to return Wilson to the House, when the rest of the country has made that momentous and necessary shift. There almost hasn't to be something underhanded going on and there have been allegations of irregularities. This will probably end up with a recount and I trust that the New Mexico State Democratic Party will not allow the will of the people to be stifled or ignored.

14. Stupidity knows no bounds
In Minnesota's 6th District, the guys up there put a fundie nutjob who thinks God personally told her to a) study tax law and b) run for Congress. Michele Bachmann. She thinks the solution to unemployment is to repeal the minimum wage. And her number-one priority in the new Congress is to not go to jail. Seriously.

http://dumpbachmann.blogspot.com/

The liberal City Pages ran a less-than-appealing article about her.

12. This win gives us
a nice round 30 seat swing (as long as Barrow holds up in Ga). I don't know how anyone could ask for more.

I still don't know how anyone could vote for George Allen, Marilyn Musgrave, Katherine Harris, Conrad Burns, Tom Reynolds, or Doug Lamborn. Anyone who did should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. Party loyalty is one thing...but these people are slime...and their own party knows it.
