Republicans Choose Ohio Rep. John Boehner To Be Minority Leader
WASHINGTON — House Republicans picked John Boehner Friday to serve as minority leader when Democrats take control of Congress for the first time in 12 years in January.

Boehner defeated Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana in a closed-door election. He was expected to speak after the elections finish for other leadership positions.

Two lawmakers vying for minority whip appear to be running close. Rep. John Shadegg, R-Aris., and Roy Blunt, R-Mo., appear to be running close in their race. They are the second- and third-ranking Republicans behind Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill. Hastert has announced he won't run for a leadership position.

The Republican elections come a day after Democrats chose Nancy Pelosi as their nominee to be the first woman House speaker. Pelosi, current minority leader, will take the reins when the 110th Congress convenes in January.

1. Isn't that the guy who blames the troops for the Iraq fiasco...
...and specifically refused to blame Rumsfeld?

35. Doesn't it though......
one of the men responsible for their ass drubbing in the mid-terms is chosen as minority leader. One would THINK the RepubliCONS would get the message: that "business as usual" in the RepubliCON party is not the way to win back their majority. One would be wrong in thinking that though, since it seems the RepubliCONS have learned nothing by anointing BONER as minority (you don't know how good it feels to write that) leader. They've pretty much come right out and said, "screw everyone, we're not changing an iota, we're staying the course".
What a bunch of idiots. :silly: I mean, it's good for US, I couldn't be happier but the RepubliCONS seem to be stuck on 'stupid'.
Again, I couldn't be happier about that because it doesn't bode well for future RepubliCON victories. Just keep doing the same things that got you into this mess, boys. The results will be different next time. Really!

7. Boehner said that he told Hastert about Foley.
Threw him under the bus. Hastert said no he didn't or at least he did not recall. Republicans have no morals at all. Lott still a racist, Boehner a pedophile excuser, Blunt a total idiot. Hang on it is going to be a wild ride. They didn't learn anything from the election.

...the "liberal" media gave the Repigs a pass for all their shenanigans. Whereas when Nancy and Jack and Steny got into it, all the pundits were ringing their hands and becrying the end of Democratic unity.

What a buncha numbnuts! I'm soooooo sick of the double standard!

8. OMG! There's dissension in the GOP ranks!! People competing for positions!!!
This just shows how disorganized the Republicans are!!!!

Oh, wait. Fox didn't say anything like that. They reported the status of the intraparty races that take place after an election as if they were just intraparty races that take place after an election. How odd.

9. Interesting, it seems House republicans just don't get it.
Boehner is part of the problem, and part of the reason they lost the House.

They are simply clueless.

12. When does the MSM and hate-radio begin looking into this guys ethics
I'm sure they'll highlight his contacts with Mr. Abrahamhoff, Tom Delay, Mark Foley, and Ney with the same vigor they drudged up an incident from 36 years ago. They will, won't they?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boehner, 56, one of three candidates for House Majority Leader, accepted $32,500 from Indian tribes that hired Abramoff as a lobbyist. But Boehner said he had no reason to believe those funds were directed by Abramoff.

He also defended his own personal friendships with lobbyists as ethical. "I've never done anything in anticipation or expectation that someone would contribute to me. Every vote that I've cast, every action that I've taken were for what was in the public's best interest."

He is a classic representative of republicans in congress. He's the right guy to "lead" them. Although on that side of the aisle the competition for that honor is fierce.

Otherwise, Boner is an embarrassment to my state. I can live with that for now since Ohio had a huge role in establishing the MINORITY leader thing.

20. I am actually lucky, Boner is not my district....
and Ted Strickland is my soon to be Governor, I will have a new Dem SOS, Treasurer, AG, Auditor and Senator (Sherrod Brown). And in 2008, I will shake Al Gore and Wesley Clark's hands as they make a campaign stop in a state that WILL send them to the WH.

And I have to tell you, if I NEVER see the idiotic faces of Ken Blackwell and Mike DeWine again, it blunts the Boner effect immensely. ...sounds wrong but it is SO right :)...I will have to wait for a few more days to see if the ugliest thing I have EVER seen in my life gets sent home from Ohio 2 (provisionals)

Buh Bye to:

32. Boehner has skeletons in his closet.
A couple of former colleagues of Boehner when he was a state rep say he was quite the playboy. Was regularly seen entering and leaving various legislative receptions/functions with other women.

He was the guy who replaced "Buz" Lukens, who resigned after making inappropriate contact with some congressional staffer around 20 years ago.

The tradition continues.

36. What he said WOULD be a change if sincere.
From the article: "We need to fight for a smaller, less-costly, and more accountable federal government." This from the new leader of the party that's presided over record budget deficits and a complete failure to hold oversight hearings.

So, who says they can't embrace change? :)
