Iraqi Sunni head says arrest warrant illegal
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
BAGHDAD, Iraq

The head of Iraq's most influential Sunni Muslim organization said Friday that the government's bid to arrest him was illegal, and his spokesman urged Sunni politicians to quit the parliament and government.

The brewing political crisis threatened the Shi'ite dominated government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and could provoke an even more violent surge in sectarian conflict as Iraq teeters on the edge of civil war.

The new upheaval began late Thursday when Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani, a Shi'ite, announced on state television that he had issued the arrest warrant against the leader of the powerful Association of Muslim Scholars, Sheik Harith al-Dhari, for allegedly inciting terrorism and violence

1. You know...
The Sunni guy probably deserved to have an arrest warrant issued for him.

The problem is, there's numerous Shi'ites who also deserve such things, but the Iraqi "government" lets them slide.

3. The Sunnis weren't really part of the government to begin with

What's dead is the US' hopes of national reconciliation between the different religious groups of Iraqi Arabs and any hope of containing the Shiite monster the US helped create here. This is not an insignificant loss.

Edit: Clarification: since the first "permanent" post-Saddam elections.

4. al-Dari celebrated al-Qaeda suicide attacks on Shia
I have no sympathy for him, but that said there are Shia criminals getting a free pass right now just because of their religion.

5. No one (at least in the bush** admin) ever gave a damn if there
was a legitimate Iraqi government. In fact, I believe they KNEW that it was impossible. All they wanted is their sham election so they could flash pictures of all those purple fingers.
