Bainimarama announces takeover

Fiji's military commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama has announced that he will take over the running of the country from midday Friday, Fiji time.

He has given the MPs until then to clear their desks.

Bainimarama says the transition will be a smooth one.

A few hours earlier Fiji's prime minister had agreed to a long list of demands by the country's maverick military commander in a bid to stave off the country's fourth coup in 20 years.

In a shock pronouncement at a press conference this evening Bainimarama warned the government must meet all nine of the army's demands in full, warning it had just 24 hours to "clean up its act."

"If they don't I will do it for them,'' Bainimarama told Fijilive.

"I think it's about time we end this impasse," he said during a press conference called hours after Qarase indicated he would bow to most of the military's "non-negotiable" list of demands
