McCain: 'I'm older than dirt'

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, acknowledged his age Thursday but brushed aside suggestions he is too old to be president.

"Ronald Reagan wasn't and I'd like you to meet my 94 year old mother who just finished driving herself around France," McCain said when asked if he is too old for the burdens of the presidency.

But McCain, who turned 70 last August, acknowledged he was inching up in his years. "I am older than dirt," McCain said. "More scars than Frankenstein."

5. Reagan may not be a good example there, John. Most corrupt administration
in the history of the nation. The only thing that saved Reagan from jail was Bush's Christmas Eve Pardon spree, which took away the leverage of the Independent Councel to force key players to testify. Without that pardon, Bush Daddy and Reagan may have served jail time for treason (selling weapons to a nation that had declared war on us usually fits that bill) or worse. And the many, many investigations into departmental corruption exceeds those of any other president. Arrests and convictions, too.

Can't say it was all about Reagan's age. Part of it was that Reagan wanted to destroy government, so he purposely appointed bad people to run things. But part of it was his general health, due in part to his age, in part to an assassin's bullet, and in part to his tragic disease.

All in all, though, Senator, I don't think Reagan is a good example to hold up, although in your party and given your complete lack of character, I guess it's appropriate.

28. Reagan should have donated his brain to science

He is responsible for not taking AIDS seriously at the beginning of the epidemic and was further responsible for the attitude that lead to discrimination against people with AIDS. He would not properly fund research and services and even prohibited effective education of gay men. History will show that he is responsible for many AIDS deaths because it was not fought early on.

6. Perhaps he's still considering suicide
Maybe, since the Dems won control of Congress, he's coming up with a way to end it all but have it look like "old age".

12. It was not Reagan's age, it was the Alzheimers in his brain.
On second thought, Reagan's brain did not work very good even when he was young. Again it is a poor comparison. McCain should have picked a better example.

13. Would that be the dirt that Americans are not willing to pull lettuce out of, even for $50 per hour?
Or would that be the dirt to which you consigned your wife and child when you did NOT stand up for them in South Carolina?

Or perhaps that would be the dirt you used to bury my habeas corpus rights when you folded on the Military Commissions Bill?

PLEASE - tell me Senator McCain - you cowardly sack of male bovine excrement!

21. Not too old? Can you be sure?
My mother is 77 and has been in a nursing home because of dementia since she was 69. In hindsight, we can see that she was mentally impaired in her early 60s, but we did not recognize it because we thought there was no reason to question her mental competency which included paranoia (people where she worked or volunteered were against her is what she claimed). Imagine a president who suffers paranoia or is unable to deal with reality, with other people actually running the executive branch. Well, imagine it do to dementia.

25. Said it before, will say it again. Don't wanna hear about Clinton's zipper with McCain in the race.
Or Rudy. Or Newt. Adulterers and wife-dumpers all. At least the Clintons stayed married.

For those who don't know the Dirt on "Older Than Dirt," here's how he treated his first wife (who had been in a horrible car accident).

http://archive.salon.com/mwt/feature/2000/03/06/carol/index.html

a snip...

... He was 42, mired in stifling ordinariness. (Civilians call it "midlife crisis.")

But McCain was making bold career moves on the home front, hotly pursuing a 25-year-old blond from a wealthy Arizona family -- while married. Carol, his wife at the time, had once been quite a babe herself apparently, until a near-fatal car accident (while her husband was in Vietnam) left her 4 inches shorter, overweight and on crutches. The couple had three children, whom Carol cared for alone while her husband was in Vietnamese prisons.

McCain's strategy worked perfectly: After chasing Cindy Hensley around the country for six months, he closed the deal late in the year, had a divorce by February and was married to Hensley shortly thereafter. Bingo! McCain was a candidate for Congress by early 1982, his coffers full, his home in the proper Arizona district purchased.

The story is compelling -- and repellent -- for a lot of reasons. And it raises some familiar questions. We have to wonder why Americans are able to excoriate a presidential candidate (or president) who cheats on his wife but accept one who did the same thing with the concentration and energy of a military strategist. Is it because McCain didn't get caught? Is it because he married his mistress? At this point, after much navel- and penis-gazing, it seems like a moot question, if only for reasons of sheer exhaustion.
