North Korea claims complete success in AIDS fight
North Korea has relied on the wise leadership of Kim Jong-il to make sure there have been no outbreaks of AIDS in the reclusive country, its official media reported on Friday.

North Korean media, which often gives glowing reports of Kim offering expert guidance on subjects as varied as cobbling shoes, firing howitzers and irrigating fields, said its Dear Leader has been deeply concerned about AIDS.

"Under the wise guidance of leader Kim Jong-il, the DPRK (North Korea) established the strategy of prevention and control of AIDS with orderly systems of its information, prognostication and watch, and examination across the country," an official newspaper said.

"On this basis, measures have been taken not to allow a single AIDS case," Minju Josun said in a report carried on the English-language KCNA news agency.

Both North Korea and Iran have had major success in stopping the spread of the AIDS virus in their population.

1. Bullshit.
Worldwide reposted cases of HIV/AIDS is over 40 million. I can only imagine what those numbers are going to look like when NK and Iran start telling the truth.

3. Ahmadinejad: We have developed a cure for AIDS
Edited on Fri Dec-01-06 02:01 PM by ECH1969
Scientists in Iran have succeeded in developing a drug for AIDS containment, the Iranian news agency FARS reported. Last week, the Iranian health minister promised good news on the matter, yet no information regarding the drug and the treatment method has been released.

On Wednesday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad held a speech at Tehran University implying that: "There is a development on the issue, and if we announce it this would mean a tremendous development, but for now we lack the ability to answer all questions and we must continue dealing with different aspects of the matter."

23. The US and the UK, France, Germany and the rest of the West have a monopoly on research, you know.
Iran has a huge IV drug use problem and corresponding HIV infection rate.

Iran has an awful lot of highly trained scientists and medical personnel, by the way.

2. The only way that you can stop the spread of AIDS is either to
kill the infected people or place them in a concentration camp. These two countries are capable of doing this. I am sure that China will eventually take strong measures to stop the spread of Aids.

6. No, that's not the only way to stop the spread of HIV.
1) Safe sex.

2) Sex education

3) Needle exchange programs.

4) Testing for donated blood and organs.

statement that the only way to stop HIV/AIDS is through death and mass interment. I believe Poppy Bush said something similar while VP.

17. None of those methods completely stop HIV transmission
Human nature makes it almost impossible to guarantee that every individual at risk of HIV will use all of those methods, 100% of the time. Unsafe sex happens, people visit prostitutes, and people use dirty needles. Those methods, in the real world, are designed to control the spread of HIV until either a vaccine or cure is created. In the meantime, anti-virals are used to lengthen lifespans. To completely wipe it out without an effective medical treatment, as North Korea has stated they have done, calls for far more drastic measures.

19. I agree, I am hoping for vaccines and better anti-virals
I was simply pointing out that the 4 methods you listed won't completely stop the spread of HIV, simply control it's spread. The original story for this thread was about N. Korea stating it had completely stopped the spread of HIV within it's borders. This has be be either BS, or they are killing and interning infected citizens. Either way it is horrifying to say the least.

Here's an interesting article about needle exchange programs. I guess my original line of thinking was if we promoted these programs and give them the funding they need, we would slow down HIV transmission to the point where HIV wouldn't be so rampant.

7. It wouldn't surprise me
What makes a drug company more money?

Developing 1 drug that cures AIDS

or

Developing 1 drug that suppresses the symptoms, another for dealing with the nausea, another for dealing with the pain, another for this, another for that.

Most people who die of AIDS don't die from the disease, they die from liver failure due to the AIDS medication. It wouldn't surprise me at all if there really is a cure out there and that drug companies are holding it back from us.

25. Actually, most people who die of AIDS die from pneumonia. Once the antiretrovirals stop working
or one never gets treatment, the wasting syndrome saps all energy and the diarreah and pneumonia from low immune levels/PCP which is all around us, by the way, finishes one off.

Liver damage is a possibility of HAART, true, but it is still PCP that kills most.

12. North Korea is very isolated (politically)
That would mean that there is very limited contact with the outside world, so the virus may not have had much of an opportunity to take hold there. Add in a sexually repressive culture, and Dear Leader might be on to something.

21. Actually....I think you have hit the nail on the head
The DPRK is so isolated and travel is so restricted that I think it is entirely possible that there have been no reported cases of HIV in the country. If I remember correctly, many western nations were first introduced to the virus via a very hot airline steward.

I have been known to be wrong, though.

by idiots on this thread that claim that Ahmedinajed and Kim Jong Ill have anything relevant to say about AIDS. I'm especially irritated that people will take Ahmedinajinutjob's claim that his country has discovered a cure for AIDS seriously.

NK may have nearly wiped it only because it is so incredibly isolated. Few enter and leave. And those that were suspected of having the disease were likely executed.

As for Iran, it is a sexually repressed nation, which is pretty much the sort of society where AIDS is likely to spread.

Anyone that believes anything coming out of fundy mouths with regards to AIDS (be it Christian fundy evangelical ass holes here in the US or Islamist fundy nut jobs abroad) is fucking stupid. I'm just so Goddamn sick of anti-scientific nonsense coming out of religious figures' mouths.
