Threats to celebrities bring charges
By Greg Krikorian, Times Staff Writer
December 2, 2006

A federal grand jury indicted a Woodland Hills man Friday on charges of sending threatening letters with white powder to half a dozen politicians and celebrities, including incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and television personalities Jon Stewart and Keith Olbermann.

The 14-count indictment accuses Chad Conrad Castagana, 39, of sending the letters from Sept. 7 through Nov. 9 to those three as well as Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, comedian and late-night talk show host David Letterman and Viacom Inc. Chairman Sumner Redstone. The powder turned out to be harmless.

LOS ANGELES A man has been indicted for sending threatening letters laced with white powder to several celebrities and politicians.

Prosectuors allege he sent letters with fake return addresses to Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, comedians Jon Stewart and David Letterman and Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone among others.

The powder contained in the letters was harmless.

43. Oh no, Lost In Space would be more like it
Gene Roddenberry had enough integrity to put at least some sense into Star Trek, but as for anything Irwin Allen and his disciple Glen Larson created, well those make sense only after heavy LSD usage.

4. Well damn, the gov't finally catches a terrorist - and he ain't an Arab
what will they report on FAUX news?

We should postpone Monday's planned start of this years War on Christmas until Wednesday afternoon, so that FAUX won't have any other distracting headlines, I really want to see them cover this. Will this be the very first case that was cracked open by all those draconian measures in the Patriot Act? Or the illegal wiretapping?

Would that be karma or simply irony - both of which are not understood by the average Freeper.

And if someone can be charged with Incitement to Riot, can they bring charges against Rush and O'Lielly for Incitement to Commit a Terrorist Act?

16. Guess so. I had a feeling there was a reason Keith looked so happy on TV last night
and maybe it wasn't just because the weekend was coming up.

As he would say: "Looks like from now on, this federal offender could end up sending letters only to his friends and family as he faces the possibility of spending up to 70 years in--THE BIG HOUSE!"

24. Problems with this post
Rape isn't something to joke about.

Some women on DU are rape victims. Some men, though less of them, also are.

When you joke about prison rape, on some level you are reinforcing the idea that rape is an appropriate way to control or punish people, and that there is something "funny" about men being put into the role of "female" - something to laugh about when men are "fucked" - because we all know that's the role women are supposed to be in.

32. Some people say it's because Rimjob is cooperating 100% with the feds...
and has turned-over every scrap of data without so much as a court order, subponae, search warrant, or even needing to hear the word "please."

Some people say.

Because unless you're guilty, you have nothing to hide.

37. HAHA! The Katherine Harris connection emerges!
You knew it was bound to happen...

from the article mcg linked:
"Investigators determined that someone who bought envelopes from that post office also bought a money order, the identification number of which was registered to Castagana. Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald Gaffney said the money order was for a contribution to benefit a political cause for Republican Rep. Katherine Harris of Florida."

How very... predictable.

47. Will Bill-O claim he's a victim
of the Culture Wars? Are the big, bad liberals threatening this poor guy for his harmless prank? His, as Limbaugh called the Abu Gharab treatment of prisoners, fratboy antics?
Is he being persecuted for political incorrectness?
Tell us, Bill-O.
I'm sure Castagana is a fan of yours.
Take up his cause, Bill.
Get "your folks at the Factor" to help this poor kid, still living at home - love those family values, with his patriotic protest. Which just happens to qualify as terroristic threats under our new Homeland Security which you rightwingers are so adamantly in favor of -- for other people.
Ann, where are you? Your boy is facing prison time. Start stitchin' those "Free Castagana" T-shirts.
Rush -- hey, this is your guy. Show some support. Sure you've been turning on Bush lately with your "they should've listened to me!" rants.
You had your Timothy McVeigh. Now, you've got Castagana.
Take the credit where credit is due.
Your peeps are gonna think you don't really care if you don't show Castagana some wingnut love.
