Ex-dictator Pinochet in 'hands of God' after heart attack (AFP)
(They shouldn't tease us with headlines like this, though "A Roman Catholic priest gave Pinochet his last rites..!" but he's still in "serious but stable" condition.) :evilfrown:

Ex-dictator Pinochet in 'hands of God' after heart attack

04/12/2006 05h20

SANTIAGO (AFP) - Former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who has never faced trial for abuses committed by his military regime, was fighting for his life after surgery for a heart attack.

A Roman Catholic priest gave Pinochet his last rites, traditionally reserved for the gravely ill near death, while the hospital listed him in "serious but stable" condition. Pinochet's death would end years of efforts to bring him to justice for the killings of dissidents during his 1973-1990 military regime.

"We will follow how things develop in the next 24 or 48 hours, which are the critical ones," said Juan Ignacio Vergara, the doctor leading the team treating Pinochet, adding that Pinochet's condition "remains serious."

Pinochet underwent angioplasty earlier Sunday to improve blood circulation to his brain. Doctors ruled out performing a second surgery due to his age....

20. Exactly. If it were God, his ass would be healthy and standing trial.
It's his own deity, Old Scratch, who's shuffling him off in time to beat the rap.

7. "Suffer!" while i would not wish it on anyone..
...i remember reading a piece from Spain, written in a bar populated by former Republcan soldiers, as a newscast came up with a report on El Caudillo, Francisco Franco, who had been lingering near death for weeks.
"Suffer!" shouted one of them, remembering the cruelty of the fascist dictatorship.
I'm guessing there are some old-timers sipping drinks in quiet Chilean bars tonight hissing the same wish for Pinochet....

8. He should stand trial even if he dies
Dying does not excuse one for their crimes. A trial must be held, irregardless of him being alive or not.

10. O sinner!
"Consider the fearful danger you are in: it is a great furnace of wrath, a wide and bottomless pit, full of the fire of wrath, that you are held over in the hand of that God, whose wrath is provoked and incensed as much against you, as against many of the damned in hell."

25. Kissinger and Nixon
It is a Sept. 16, 1973, chat between Kissinger and Nixon, discussing
the anti-Allende coup that occurred five days earlier.

The actual telephone transcript reads:

Nixon: "Well, we didn't -- as you know -- our hand doesn't show on this one though."

Kissinger: "We didn't do it. I mean we helped them. ________ created the
conditions as great as possible."

24. Pinochet is taking as long to die as Spanish dictator Francisco Franco
I remember when Pinochet was in England facing deportation to Spain to answer for crimes against humanity, when the doctors said that he was near death. Tony Blair allowed Pinochet to leave the UK. The news media showed pictures of Pinochet on a wheelchair being oisted aboard a jetliner bound for Chile. When the plane arrived in Chile, where a cheering throng of supporters waited, Pinochet walked out of the plane in full military uniform, smiling and waiving at the crowd.

Everytime Pinochet faces justice, he becomes "near death." Let the sob die!

26. Take him on his very own, personal "Caravan of Death," like the one he had
arranged for supporters of Salvador Allende, the People's Choice for President immediately before he overthrew him.

They would give him a nice, relaxing ride high over the ocean, or a lake, or the peaks of the Andes, and then throw him out, after sedating him enough to make him easy to control.
